Question about RCA HD50LPW42 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Have sound but no picture

It started to make a noise when we turned it on and from the sound of it you could tell it was trying to come on. It would have a picture with no color and as it would crack and pop the picture would finally come in. Now there is just sound and no picture.

The internal bulbs have deteriorated...the manufacturers are real smart, these monitors dont last forever. So if repair estimate is too expensive then replace the whole unit.

Sometimes the ballast can whine but most times it is the color wheel as it has a motor that spins it at high RPM.As they fail they'll make a squealing type noise and keep the set from coming up. If the you can pinpoint the sound (it would be right nest to the lamp) then its the wheel.

Samsung is notorious for having the motor on the color wheel burn out. If the color on the tv starts to fade or shift tones when the rev'ing or noise is happening then you'll know its the color wheel. There are only two moving parts in this set, the color wheel and the fans. If you're smelling something, it could be either. Take the back off the set and put a piece of tape on the lamp door switch and turn the set on. Try to pinpoint the source of the noise. If its a fan, no big deal, Radio shack should have a replacement. If it sounds like its comming from under the set, dig a little deeper and try unhooking the color wheel motor, not as easy as I am making it sound but either way the fan is about $20 to fix and the color wheel is about $100. Sure beats a $400 tech bill. If you get stuck, comment back and I'll send pictures of the dismantle.

Try going into the menu and find something called, "center channel input." If it is on, the sound will not work. Turn it off, and the sound should be restored.

The power supply is telling you that it has a short. I think you have a bad high voltage transformer in the horizontal deflection circuit. I've repaired several RCA's with this very same problem. The newer RCA's are vert prone to high voltage transformer failure ! Stargazer
