Screen got wide; nasty acrid smell like chlorine or ozone started
Hi, we have a 27" Sylvania TV. It was working fine, and then the picture got wide, the remote stopped working, the sound started coming in and out (mostly out), and then there was an acrid smell, but the tv was not hot. The model is 6427CTA, and it's about 10 years old.

It has gone into a self protect mode where it will shut down because you have a fault in the frame stage of the TV (horizontal line). This will most likely be a failure of the frame output IC. Replace this & you should restore the normal picture.
You are losing high voltage; if you sniff around the top or back of the set, you may smell ozone.
Pull the AC plug on the set overnight, remove the few screws holding the rear housing on, use a CLEAN (or new cheap) paint brush and if you have a vacuum with a hose, bring it along too.
The CRT (picture tube) will be nasty, full of dust that is picking up moisture and creating a path for the high voltage to discharge and you need to clean it with the brush and it's better if you hold the vacuum hose close by so you can **** up the dust loosened by the brush.
If you clean it well (dry, not wet), the problem should be gone.
from what your describing it sounds like a resolution or ratio setting on your t.v. you can change these setting on your cable box and t.v as well this seems to be the setting on your t.v. since you have already unhooked the cable box. if changing the settings doesnt resolve your issue you may have some failed components on the pc board that could be repaired by a repairman v/s purchasing a new one. hope this was helpful....
a cycle with just hot water and chlorine bleach will help but you may have to work at it a litle longer to get the door seal any cleaner in future run a short cycle with bleach and leave door open between use as much as possible..there is a new tablet shaped cleaner out now that may help in routine cleaning ckd with local dealer or repair personel also may ckd grocery shelf
Mine does too. Did a little research - I guess all air filters let out a little bit of ozone. Some describe the smell of ozone to be something like bleach yet others say it smells like geraniums or even "sparks" (like the sparks that come off of the bumper car ride at the fair...hmm...interesting). Not sure which to believe, but I know mine smells. I found a manual talking about reducing this smell. Said the first couple of weeks are the worst of it, but if it still bothers you, you could install an "activiated carbon filter" down stream from the air filter, or go through complicated instructions (for whatever model they were talking about) to go into the of the machine and switch stuff around. Both solutionssound complicated to me. I'm just happy knowing the smell is normal and that it is actually working. Think I'll live with the smell.
This problem sounds like a short inside the picture tube itself unless a driver transistor failed that drives the red gun in the CRT. You may have to take it to an authorized repair facility if the picture tube is still in warranty.
