Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

OT Bobby, I had asked you last week in regards to a JVC Television LT-42X788 with a with faint blue vertical bands screen, hearing sound and backlight working. You said that the problem would be the analog board and or the cable connecting to the digital board. Can you give me instuctions how to repair these faults and where to purchase the parts. I am in Toronto Canada. I have experience with soldering and using multimeters and know about electronic parts. How would I check the power cable and identify the parts that would need replacing? I can email photos of the exposed cards if helpful. I could not find a specific repair manual and the closest I have found online is for the LT-42X688 which looks quite similar but may have some differnt parts. Pleasze let me know if you can assist me with this problem. Thank you for your prompt reply, Willy Halpert

If there is no fix then where can I purchase at a reasonable price a new digital board and the flat connecting cable? Thank you for your prompt answer.

Thank you Bobby. It seems to be the analog board and/or the flat silver wires going to the digital board. I will try to purchase the board and the cable and a better soldering iron to give that a try first. I wish I cvould somehow compensate you for your great assistance and clearly described actions to be taken.

    My email is whalpert@rogers.com.

Soldering the Connectors will not fix this problem.
...
1. Remove the TV Rear cover.
2. Look at the wires on connected to the top of the middle board (Analog Board)
3. if they are White, this is 98% likely to be the cause of your problem. If the are a Tan/Khaki color these are OK.
4. If Tan/Khaki connectors on that middle board, I would replace the Video Process Board on the far right. Check Option 1 below for where to find boards.

I have a few options for repair of the white connector situation:

OPTION 1
Buy the board on Ebay making sure you dont get one with the white connectors. You can use a board from the 42" and 47 inch versions of this TV. X688, X788, XM78 and I think they had a few others. Also, call JVC they may sell it to you. If not companies like Vance Baldwin or Aarons may sell it to you. This may be 40-140 depending on where you get it. The part number is on the sticker label printed on the board....not the generic label silkscreened onto the board.

OPTION 2

Middle Board, Top Right connector. Remove the wires from the connector on the middle boards side and solder them directly to the board without the connector. This will not be as easy as it sounds. If done incorrectly, the problem will continue. If done correctly you will fix it. Also, take a look at the ICs at the top toward the connector and the similar ones along the board. Double check these to make sure they dont have any OBVIOUS damage. By Obvious I mean completly blown up or holes in them. Based on your symptom I am 98% sure it is the white connector thing but you never know.

I hope this helps and good luck. Also, unless you have a GREAT soldering Iron I don't necessarily recommend 2. These PWB have a large ground that transfers heat well. You can burn it if using the wrong IRON or TIP. 600Fahrenheit max for Lead free Solder no more :).

Vertical line on screen

Hi, This is a problem that's far too common among flat-panel and projection LCD TV's?and it's generally known as "vertical banding." If the lines are there all the time or intermittent but in the same location it is an indication of a bad panel. The panel driver can also be the cause of this symptom. Samsung panels have had issues with the connector that carries the LVDS signals to the panel itself, this is not serious and can be resolved and little cost. These faint vertical bars (often most apparent when the screen is totally dark or displaying a solid background, like the sky) are defects that occur during the manufacturing process, and while the worst offenders are typically screened out, many more make it to store shelves. Since you've pinpointed the banding and it's driving you nuts, also its under warranty, call the manufacturer and demand a replacement; in most cases, they'll capitulate and send you a new set, although you'll probably have to go to the trouble of packing and shipping back your defective TV (make sure the manufacturer covers your shipping costs). I have a 2 inch black band which appears intermittently dwon the full height of a 22inch JVC lcd television can anyone explain it for me? thanks

If it is black vertical band from the top all the way down to the bottom of the screen, your LCD panel is going bad and you will see more bands and it will get worst.

I wish to buy a JVC LT-42X788 Service Manual. he TV has only sound and the screen has only faint shades of blue vertical bands. Touching the screen shows that lighted ares thus the lamp seems to be OK. I...

This problem is related to a Board Failure on the TV. I garuntee is is not a Power Supply Problem since Sound and Backlight is OK. I have repaired a few of these and the most likely failed part is the board in the middle. I think they call it the analog board. This board has some regulator ICs at the top of it that power the Video Circuits. If these fail you will get the problem you see. Also check the cables between the middle board and the one on the right.

Dark band at top of screen...now whole screen

Pop sound is probably the Lamp or maybe the color wheel. When you unplug and try it on do you hear a whirling or winning sound ? Is it followed by a slight ticking sound ? If you get the whirling and a ticking sound it's probably a bad lamp. If you don't hear the whirling sound you may have a bad color wheel. The parts are both made of glass. The pop you heard was one of them breaking. If you can't tell, order a lamp you will need to change it eventually anyway.

Vertical lines on my 40 inch lcd mitsubishi hdtv 1080

Similar problem with an eleven and a half month old LT-40148. Approx. 1 inch vertical banding line on left side of screen on all inputs. After about two weeks, same problem on the right side of the screen.

Fortunately this occurred two weeks prior to the one year warranty expiring.

Called Mits customer service and they referred me to an authorized service center who I happened to have dealt with before.

They picked up the set. The front panel (LCD screen ) had to be replaced. Set was gone for two weeks as parts were not in stock. There was no charge. I hope this screen last more than a year.
