Question about Canon PowerShot G5 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Power failure Canon G5 has had a complete power failure. Will not come on at all in any mode. Battery is fresh and functions in other cameras. I have taken it apart and the power switch appears to be functioning properly. My meter shows that it behaves the same way in both directions (play and record). Any ideas? Does anyone know where to get Canon parts cheap?

Check the fuses on the printed board circuits.

They are labeled with a P, H or K in the middle of them.

Check them for zero ohms to test them with a meter,.

Tv setting on my Canon G5 only produces blue photos. Please advise.

Sounds like an internal problem to me. If this is only happening in the TV mode then it could be that the camera is showing its age and starting to slowly malfunction. The G5 is a great camera but is now around ten years old. If all the other modes are fine then perhaps you should continue to use it but personally I'd get another camera because you may be shooting something important with it and it will decide to completely mess up the images.
Hope this helps.

It is known problem of ccd imager chip failure in few Canon models and your S2 IS got that problem too, ccd imager chip will be replaced to get live view in camera mode to take fresh pictures.
Local camera repair shop will help you to replace ccd imager chip in camera or click Canon CCD Imager Support and talk to them if they can replace it for free.

My canon rebel gave an error 99 and then lost all power. It won't power even with a fresh battery.

It is due to some kind of electrical contact failure.
For more details and common causes of Err 99 read the following article:

IMovie and Canon ZR500 no image

I have a slightly different but related model of Canon camera. I have found that if you erroneously power it on in "camera" mode instead of "playback" mode, you get the symptoms you describe: you can control the camera with iMovie, but you can't get any video out of it. Make sure you have the power switch in "playback" position -- it's an easy mistake to make.

I'm assuming you're talking about a point-and-shoot model, and not the 1000D as the category suggests. Camera mode has significantly higher power requirements than viewing mode. It is possible that your rechargeable battery has degraded to a point where it no longer can power camera mode, or it might just be discharged. Try with a freshly charged battery, or if you're lucky enough to run on AA batteries, get new ones. You might also try using the camera while plugged into the USB port of the PC, which might be able to supply power to the camera. I have noticed that when the batteries are near-empty, the camera "dies" rather abruptly.
