I have a 500GB external that the dog knocked over while it was on(I know thats a BIG no-no) and now it makes scratchy noises and does not get recognized by my computer. There is a light on it that goes from red to green when everything is ok and running fine, and sometimes it goes green for a split second, getting my hopes up, then goes right back to red. :-(
Is there any way to fix it? I read about repairing/ignoring bad sectors but if I can not get it to be recognized by my computer, what can I do? And is there any way I can save or recover the files?
Thanks!
I have a similar problem with external HDD its a 250 GB and recently it stop working, so i bought the USB Y cable that is suggested from the toshiba website, but now it wont work at all the blue light comes on and i can feel the disc on the inside spinning but nothing happens.<!-- from fixya rte -->
If it's making a scratching and screeching noise, could be the head dragging on the platter. If that happened when it was subject to force, the heads are now damaged, as may be the platter(s) as well. Sounds like it may need a clean room recovery service. And failing hard drives aren't like wine, they don't get better with age. So if you have data that is not replaceable, and absolutely needs to be recovered, turn it off now. And see if you can find a local recovery facility. It's an expensive process for clean room services.
Cherry Systems in Atlanta, Ga is one. DriveSavers out west is another well known outfit. Geek Squad claims to have clean room services as well, but never looked into it.
