Question about Toshiba 250GB TOSHIBA USB 2.0 PORTABLE EXTERNAL 25 250 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Dog knocked over drive while on, now it does not work.

I have a 500GB external that the dog knocked over while it was on(I know thats a BIG no-no) and now it makes scratchy noises and does not get recognized by my computer. There is a light on it that goes from red to green when everything is ok and running fine, and sometimes it goes green for a split second, getting my hopes up, then goes right back to red. :-(

Is there any way to fix it? I read about repairing/ignoring bad sectors but if I can not get it to be recognized by my computer, what can I do? And is there any way I can save or recover the files?

Thanks!
I have a similar problem with external HDD its a 250 GB and recently it stop working, so i bought the USB Y cable that is suggested from the toshiba website, but now it wont work at all the blue light comes on and i can feel the disc on the inside spinning but nothing happens.

If it's making a scratching and screeching noise, could be the head dragging on the platter. If that happened when it was subject to force, the heads are now damaged, as may be the platter(s) as well. Sounds like it may need a clean room recovery service. And failing hard drives aren't like wine, they don't get better with age. So if you have data that is not replaceable, and absolutely needs to be recovered, turn it off now. And see if you can find a local recovery facility. It's an expensive process for clean room services.

Cherry Systems in Atlanta, Ga is one. DriveSavers out west is another well known outfit. Geek Squad claims to have clean room services as well, but never looked into it.

Need manual for mad dog multimedia external wiring harnness

Unfortunately, Mad Dog Multimedia went out of business years ago, and no longer provide support services or documentation for any of their products.

Unless you can find another one of these external drive cases on a sale rack somewhere, or being sold used by an individual, your chances of finding the original manual are extremely slim.

My Mad Dog drive buzzes every half second and the light flickers with the buzz. I don't know what that means, do you?

this happens to my external drives if they are not getting enough power thru the usb sockets.
Usually the rear sockets on the backplate(desktop pc) have more power.
You can also use a y cable that has 2 sockets on one end to get power from 2 usb sockets

My Mad Dog external hard drive does not show up as a drive. How do I get this to show so I can access my information.

Connect it to a different computer, to see if the device is working at all.

If not, and if the Mad Dog is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

Otherwise, disassemble the casing, remove the disk-drive,
and connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive is OK. This would imply that the USB-to-disk-drive interface inside the casing is the problem.

Ugh! I feel horrible for you. I had this happen to me recently, but, it wasn't my dog, it was my wife!

First, there is not much you can do to fix or recover the data if the hard drive has failed due to an impact. But, there are a few things to observe to validate that the hard drive has failed.
First, when you plug it in, does it spin up? You may be able to tell by listening to it purr. Secondly, you can pick it up while its running, hold it in the palm of your hand and slowly rotate your hand. If the disc is spinning, you will feel the centripetal resistance to motion. If you don't hear or feel the disc spinning, likely the motor is broken.
One thing to caution you on, the more you leave the drive on, the chances of retrieving your data go down.
Depending on the age of your device, the unit may still be under warranty. So, don't open it up to access the drive, this will void any warranties. Toshiba has an easy to use online service program where you can obtain support to replace the unit or retrieve data. While under warranty, the unit will be replaced at no charge to you. But, don't tell them about the dogs! Just claim ignorance, "I turned it on and it didn't work."
The data retrieval program Toshiba uses is through a 3rd party service that may offer a flat rate or discounted service. The price will ****, data retrieval, based on the size of your drive, can range anywhere from $1000 to $1500 (it sucks, I know). They prey on the hope that your data is precious and unrecoverable. So, that's what your in for, best of luck.

Mad Dog Hard Drive - Immediate Help

The grand majority of these external hard drives can't withstand being dropped from 3 inches, and some can't be dropped 1/2 inch. In other words, to retrieve your data, you will have to send it to a specialist, who will charge you between $300 to $1500 to get the data, with no guarantees. What a deal. I had a Fantom 120 gb, my dog knocked it over, and by by data. The fact that it is making noises means it has been knocked out of kilter. Try calling them with your warranty, but I bet it won't cover it. The whole industry is a big ripoff, as they do not warn you that you can lose everything at the drop of a hat (as it were). Only one company guarantees a drop of 7 feet that I know of. Better off to back up your data using an online secure system. Some cost only $4.95/month. Sorry.

MacBook and Mad Dog Multimedia Compatible?

According to http://www.mdmm.com/spec.php?productid=160 (check the requirements tab, note that it doesn't work on firefox due to bad coding), it only supports Windows 2000 and Windows XP (even though it doesn't say so, it's likely it's also supported by Windows 98 and Vista) but unless someone made drivers for mac os x, it doesn't look like it'll work.
