Question about Targus Chill Mat PA248U Laptop Cooler

1 Answer

Power cable problems, also

Actually, there is absolutely nothing wrong with my USB ports. I bought one of these for myself and liked it, then bought one for my daughter. Hers quit working first - power cable seems not to work at all. Mine works intermittently, but only when held in certain positions - and I can't always figure out which exact position is working in order to tape it in place to hold there. From what I've read from other users on this forum, this seems to be a common problem. I've been through several Targus and other branded chill mats - this one seems to have quit sooner than the others.

thanks but i have no clue how to go about doing this. i realize the power cable connection is loose or has a short circuit. but i have no idea how to open it up & splice the power cable. targus sent me two brand new chill mats and now my new one has quit working - again. i think the fault must be in the design.

Open it up and splice the current power cable and connect it permanently to the USB connector. The problem is the power plug gets loosened after some time and can't make a proper connection.

I can not find an HDM1 port on my Sharp TV. Can I use the USB Port?

No, the HDMI plug will not fit into a USB port. (It's the wrong shape and the pins are different.) The micro-USB port can be connected to some USB ports for power, not data, with the appropriate cable (micro USB to type A). (Without the model of your Sharp TV, I do not know if the USB port has the right specifications. Some older TVs only have a "service port" which doesn't always provide enough power.)

There are HDMI to component video/audio converters that may work. They do not always work with copy protected (HDCP) content. See http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/770115-REG/KanexPro_HDRGBRL_HDMI_to_Component_Converter.html for one example. (Composite video is not recommended since that will downgrade the signal to 480i. Component video supports 1080p signals.)

If you have 1 HDMI port, then a multi-port HDMI switch may work. Note: automatic switches often do not switch on their own with some sources. If the source never actually turns off, like some set-top boxes, you'll need to switch the unit manually.

I hope this helps.

Nothing happens when plugged in to my laptop

This could be a number of things, lets go over the most likely.
-It is possible if you have an older laptop that you have USB 1.1 ports instead of the needed USB 2.0 port required to provide the device power. (If it has a separate "optional" power supply, use it.) Or all of the USB 2.0 ports are being used. Try unplugging all of your USB devices except for the interface and try it in different ports.
-If this isn't a problem and you have free and powered USB 2.0 ports then the next most likely culprit is bad drivers. Try uninstalling the drivers for the device (if you've installed them) and downloading the newest drivers from the M-Audio web-site and installing those.
Great choice of gear, I use quite a bit of M-Audio equipment myself and it's good quality for a good price...
Hope this helps. Thank you.

Firewire

firewire is a lot like usb in the power area if the drive is not getting power i would suspect the firewire port. firewire did not become very popular because of problems like these. You need to go down to a computer parts store and by a firewire card and that should provide enough power and bypass the on-board ports. Try to hook another device up to the firewire ports and see if they work if not install the daughterboard with firewire ports
