Question about Maytag Legacy Series Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I think I also have a Main Seal problem

I also have a Maytag Legacy series TL washer and I'm experiencing all of the same signs and symptoms as many others seem to be (leaking water and grinding during spin cycles). I like to fix things myself because I'm cheap, a student, and broke, therefore I'm simply looking for any advice on repairing this thing. I have the machine apart and have found the rusty water splash line on the inside of the unit and I have removed the aggitator as well. Now I've gotten to the point where I need the special tool to go further. So, my questions are: 1)Is this problem worth fixing? 2)Can it be fixed. 3) Can I stop the noise problem when it's spinning and how if so? 4) Where do I find this magical removal tool and how much do they cost. 5) What parts would be recommended that I purchase? (new seal, bearings, etc. ...)

I thank you for any information you can provide me and I appreciate your response.

Re: I think I also have a Main Seal problem

We too had this problem. Called out the appliance repair man....He took away our machine. Had to fix the Seal, Bearing, and belt. Brought it back after having it a few days and Now SMELLS like rubber burning. After spending almost 300 dollars my husband had to get under it and found a spring stretched to the hilt. We are replacing the spring and we hope no more fire stinky rubbery smell. BUT it doesn't leak nor does it sound like a plane taking off anymore. IF I could do it again??? I would have bought a new washer without all the frills just because I have done some looking and see that this is a "normal" problem for this washer. AND it may happen AGAIN. Wish us luck but that is what we had done. As far as the appliance repair man?? THEY do not know what is wrong with it and why it "STINKS". Should have just had the hubby fix it.

Washer is making loud noises when it spins and is leaking from the bottom

Your main centre bearing is defective caused by the inner hub and seal from developing a leak. I must admit these repairs are not your normal type of repair.Machine needs to be totaly stripped and wiring disconnected to gain access to components and repair. Suggest you look at 3 quotes and see what price they are asking.

I have a Maytag wash machine where the main seal just went out again for the second time in (3) years. This is getting too expensive to keep fixing. Should I get a new one?

if you seal keeps failing maybe the shaft is pitted and worn causing it to wear prematurely as far as buying a new machine you will have to make that decision if you do fix again check shaft you may be able to restore it with some emery cloth hope this has helped

Tangled, "knotted" cloths

hi, these are early signs of drive failure. the drive is made up of a clutch assembly and a transmission(gearbox). it also has a brake that is integrated into the drive as well. these components work together and if one or more start to malfunction, it will cause squeaking noises and slow reacting braking of the drum as well.

You will have to replace the drive and transmission soon.

Water leak

If the main seal is leaking there will typically be a splash line around the inside of your washer cabinet. There is a special wrench available for removing the large nut that holds the inner basket in. This nut is aluminum and can be removed with a chissel if it is stuck. remove the inner basket and you will see cone shaped "NUT" that is covered in cork. There is a torx screw on the side of the cone shaped piece. once the screw is removed then the cone shaped nut can be removed using the special wrench and brute force.
