How do I care for my charcoal filter? When do I need to change from normal to auto and what does that mean?

Charcoal filter can be brushed off with a soft brush or vacuumed. Soaking or using cleaner of any kind is not recommended. Order a new one from the company when it gets too dusty to clean out, when it's bent, when it looks "thinner" or has empty spots, or when you've used it for 2 or 3 years. The carbon helps absorb odors, and gets "used up" after time.
I need the name/model of the machine to tell you what normal/auto means. In any case, daily operation should be in the "normal" setting.

I'm 79 yrs old. I think I got taken advantage of by a fast talking salesman and paid way too much for my Defender air cleaner. I didn't get a manual, and i don't know how or when to change the filter....

Schedule: Remember, to receive the full benefit from your Defender® , replace your filters regularly. • Every 6 months, replace your Enviropure® Charcoal Filter. • Once a year (for Perpetual Warranty*)/up to every 3 years (depending on usage), replace your Medi-Filter® Cartridge.
Filters available from this Amazon seller: http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_in_-2_p_4_19?me=A2XHGJAEAIWR55&rh=i:merchant-items,n:!1063498,p_4:Filter+Queen&bbn=1063498&ie=UTF8&qid=1293951284&rnid=15899471

If you go to this website, you will see that this model has a washable filter: http://www.brookstone.com/sl/product/65099-pure-ion-pro-air-cleaner.html
If you still have the literature that came with the purifier, contact their support number if your unit has a charcoal filter.

How do I clean the Oreck Air 7

Hi There,

Here's how you can clean the machine, and I have copied the link to the owners manual below for your convenience.

Cleaning
The Cabinet
You can clean the air purifier cabinet with mild, non-abrasive cleanser and a
soft cloth. IMPORTANT: Unplug the unit from its electrical power source.
Do not spray cleansers or furniture polish into the louver or grill areas.

Collector Cell
Indicator light is green under normal operation and flashes red
when the cell requires cleaning. To clean, proceed as follows:
The red "WASH CELL" light will flash or illuminate when it is
time to clean your cell. However, it is recommended that every four to
eight weeks or if snapping sounds become frequent, clean your
electronic air purifier. Your electronic air purifier is still filtering the air
when the red light illuminates. Cleaning your electronic air purifier is a
snap too... and a must for efficient operation.
1. Turn the unit off and unplug it from the electric power source. If wall
mounted, remove unit from wall.
2. Remove front grill by unscrewing the retainer screw under the grill on
the cabinet bottom. (fig. 1)

3. Pull the cell out of the cabinet by using the two small handles on the
front of the cell. (fig. 2)

4. Snap off the charcoal odor absorber from the back of the cell. Change
as necessary for continued odor removal. (fig. 3)
5. Slide off pre-filter. This can be cleaned with the cell and reused. (fig. 4)
NOTE: Handle the electronic cell with care. Damaged metal plates
and/or broken wires will cause the air purifier to malfunction. (Do
not wash charcoal odor absorber; it is disposable.)
Cleaning with Assail-A-Cell® Cell Cleaner:
6. Using Assail-A-Cell® Cleaner, thoroughly saturate the cell and prefilter.
Be sure to spray between each cell plate and cover every
surface. Allow product to soak for a few minutes, not allowing it to dry.
Rinse thoroughly with water. For extremely heavy deposits, repeat the
process.
IMPORTANT: Dry the collection cell thoroughly outside of the
air purifier before reinstalling it into the air purifier. Ensure
that all areas including corners and areas that may trap
water are dry before reinstalling into the air purifier. DO NOT
place a wet or damp collection cell in the air purifiereff1848.jpg

I have a Trion Max 5 1400. when the air is flowing past, I turn on the power switch and both lights come on, then go right off. We have had the unit for awhile, and have had the power module repaired...

Read the owner's manual for troubleshooting, it has a lot of information.
https://www.trioniaq.com/getfile2.aspx?fileid=9024
http://www.trionparts.com/trion-max-5-1400-air-cleaner-parts.html

Check the ionization wires are there, one may be broken and touching the ground plates.

Also check to see if the wires have a growth touching the ground plates. If so, clean the grids and wires; let it dry. Water and electricity don't play nice.
