Question about Computers & Internet
Both of my 750 GB external hard drives shut down completely. There's no blue light to indicate its on and it my laptop doesnt recognize them anymore when I plug it in it's like they crashed
Try the following:
1) Does the Power LED come on? (Y) the check the mounting slot for any pins that are bent. Did this solve your problem? (Y) Good (N) then step 2.
2) LED is DEAD, then check the circuit board on the external unit, if the caps are blown due to a power surge replace the caps with the correct Volatge (V) and Farrheid range (Mu). If this is fine then step 3
3) Does the hard drive make a clicking noise? (Y) then it can be the spindle or actuator that has packed up due to some external force (dropped or placed by a magnet or speaker) replace the drives. If it is (N) then does it make a spinning noise? (Y) then it is still working, now does the bios recognise these drives? (Y) then proceed to your windows platform, press start -> setting -> control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> disc management -> are they displayed there? (y) but not marked active, click the action bar next to file, select rescan, after that see if it is accessable, if yes exit to windows, if not, then right click and correct the problem by making the partition active on the selected device.
4) If the Bios doesn't recognise these external drives it could be hardware failure due to various reasons. Make sure that you checked the cables, usb slots, and that there are no conflicts in the device manager tabs.
Hope this helped
