Question about Toshiba SD-3990 DVD Player
When I try to play a DVD, it will not read the disc and only says "no disc." It has been working fine until now.
Just re-seating the flat cable, many times, didn't work for me. Instead, I very carefully cut about about 1mm off the end with a straight, smooth edge scissors. Then I plugged it in, pushed the clip down, and it worked! Be sure to cut straight, or the fine pitch contacts might not line up.

I also had the No-Disc problem. The disc was not spinning in the tray. My solution was a take on reseat the ribbon cable solution. I tried simply reseating the cable, but that did not work. When I removed the cable I noticed discoloration on some of the pins. Instead of cutting of the end of the cable, I soaked a Q-Tip in rubbing alcohol and cleaned the discoloration and re-inserted the cable.

try opening the unit, and remove the ribbon cable from the mainboard that leads to the dvd drive assembly, then reseat the ribbon. worked like a charm for me.

I unseated all connections between the board and drive and still had the same problem, "no".

Re-seating the cable didn't work for me either, but carefully cutting a small portion of the end of the cable and then reseating it (as xr704 suggested) did the trick just fine... for the few next months at least!

Yep i straightened out the ribbon kinks and tried it. so far so good. although i've found it gets confused with live cds and cuts off the end or beggining.

Joeyjoejoes solution is what worked for me but it wasn't as simple. I had to completely remove the optical drive, disconnecting all cables, and reinstalling the drive THREE times to get the player to work again.
I think the problem is the cheap ribbon cables Toshiba is using. After reseating them several times, the player is now back in action.

Have you tryed to use a lens cleaning disc yet. The laser lens on these players and recorders alike, must have the lens cleaned every oince in awhile. If that does not help, most likly you have a bad laser pickup assembly and you will need to replace the plaer as to have that repaiered, you could buy a new unit. Good Luck

This just worked for me. Don't know how long it will last though. I found it on this webpage
To do a reset:
On the remote control press the SETUP button,
Press the right key on the remote 3 times,
The Preference page will show up,
Press the down arrow five time to highlight
"default", hit right arrow to highlight "reset"
Press enter to reset. Turn off/on machine, etc.

SOURCE: dvd playback
Clean the DVD lens with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and a Qtip. Be careful not to press down too hard. Gently clean the lens all around. Changing Qtips if you see anty signs of debris or dirt on the tip.
