does the motor on the opener run and the chain move but the door won;t come up?
there is a safety lever near the front that if pulled unlatches the chain drive. make sure it is latched in locked position and try it again.or unlatch it and see if the chain drive works.
If it doesn;t workj at all it possibly is jammed somewhere start looking for that.
if it comes on and acts like it working but does nothing look at the sprocket shaft and see if a keyway snapped.

Remove the cover and take a look at the drive gear. It sounds like it is stripped.

SOURCE: garage door opener won't open garage door

did you use the manual release to unlatch the door from the opener? You may have a problem with the door binding and opening it manually will confirm that. You may also have misaligned the sensors at the base of the door so check that too.

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if it is bad. Tell me - if it won't open how do you know it won't close?

Check your door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not flickering ever so slightly. Tweak them a bit. If you cannot get both lights to light you have bad sensors.

Sounds like the receiver in your opener has quit working. Unless you break in you need to call a door technician. They can drill a hole in the door, use a special tool to pull the manual release and open the door. You should then have them install a keyed manual release if this ever happens again. They can also repair or replace your opener.

The motor has a thermal protector that will cause the motor to quit when it gets hot. If you let it cool off it will automatically reset and should work again.
