Question about Heating & Cooling

AC is not cooling properly. The connection from the line set to the outdoor unit is frosted over, and the coil inside the duct is partially frosted over. Is this normal, or is this my problem.

HI, this is not normal. your coil is frozen because of the filter situation. your filter may have not allow proper flow and , the result is core failure. you will need to remove the core and wash over the entire unit with a pressure hose. this will remove the ice at a faster rate. after the core is cleaned, you will then need to check the compressor for its operational value. make sure the compressor seals are ok and, test the compressor start module for good continuity. you will need to observe the compressor motor in action to listen for pings and rattles. if you hear any abnormal noise, replace the compressor and motor.

In most cases, the compressor will be fine and, you will just need to purge the system after the removal of the core and, re fill the refrigerant after core replacement.

NOTE--. the core will have a 50/50 chance of survival during a freeze over but, in some cases, total core replacement will be needed due to cracks caused by the freeze over.

Air Conditioner freeze ups cause an A/C to blow little to no air through the vents, and the air is usually warm.

There are three basic reasons for air conditioner freeze ups:
  1. Insufficient air flow
  2. Low Refrigerant charge
  3. Outdoor temperature
1) The two most common causes of insufficient air flow are dirty filters and under sized ducts. A dirty filter limits air flow which in turn allows the cooling coil’s temperature to drop below freezing. Replacing the filter, monthly, usually alleviates this problem. Under sized ducts will also cause the system to freeze because it also limits the amount of air flowing over the cooling coil. This results in lowering the coil temperature and allowing the humidity in the air to collect on the coil and freeze.

2) Low Refrigerant Charge. The refrigerant system teeters on a delicate balance. If the system is not charged correctly, the system will not function properly. This malfunction may result in the poor cooling output and/or freezing up. Only a qualified, certified service technician can properly test and charge a refrigerant system. Check your small high pressure line (should be hot) and low pressure line (should be cold, but not frozen).

3) Outdoor temperature. If temperatures are too low, the system will not operate properly, and freeze up may occur. The outdoor unit does not function well in temperatures below 60 degrees F. A special “ambient temperature” control must be installed to allow the unit to run properly in cool temperatures, or you may open your windows and save energy. If the A/C is set lower than 70 degrees F, special adapters are required to be installed.

Hi, I have an LG artcool A09AHD aircon unit and after a while on the heat cycle, the unit stops and shows a circle with a snowflake and a waterdrop within the circle. Does anybody know what alarm tjis is?...


This may just be the defrost cycle for the outdoor unit. In the heat mode, the outdoor unit builds frost on the coil. The outdoor unit senses how much frost has built up on the coil and reverses the refrigerant cycle to allow the outdoor coil to warm up and defrost it. After a short period, the unit then restores itself to the heat cycle. This is normal operation and nothing to worry about. During the defrost cycle, you may feel some cool air inside your home.

The frost on the pipe indicates you have a dirty filter, dirty evaporator coil, Blower not running at the proper speed (to slow) or you are low on refrigerant.

The front ac unit has very poor cooling and left running, freezes up and drips water out of the ceiling grill. I s the unit shot?


Ensure the air filter and evaporator coils are clean. If they are clean and everything is running properly, then the unit may need refrigerant. It depends on the age of your equipment and the location of the leak (price to repair) as to whether or not the unit is shot. Check your air filter and evaporator coil first. :-)

My airconditioner lines keep freezing up


Your filter is plugged, or the refrigerant is low, or it is getting too cold outside overnight (less than 60degf)

The Intertherm AC Model B3BV-030K-A is blowing warm air


If you don’t see any frost on the suction line or big line on the furnace
(that goes from the furnace to the outdoor unit) and the filter and coil are clean then you are probably low on refrigerant.

When heat is running the a/c coils freeze over with frost can you tell me the problem


The outdoor coils getting some frost on them is normal. However the system should periodically (every 30-90 mins of run time) go into "defrost" mode. Essentially it reverts back to cooling and shuts off the outdoor fan. This heats the coil outside to melt the frost. You may see some steam at this time also. Again normal. If this is not happening or not happening often enough the coil will ice up. Inside the outdoor unit is the defrost board. There is usually a pin setting for either 30-45-60 or 90 minutes. Make sure you kill the power to the unit before sticking your hands in there. Check to see what setting your is on and lower it one peg. My air conditioning unit is not blowing as cold as it did, nor is it blowing as hot as it did in the heating mode


90 percent of the time the freon charge is low and lack of freon lessens the amount of compressed heat that can be created and also the amount of heat that can be extracted. hence less cooling and less heating. however the exact same thing can occur when a change over valve gets stuck partially between heat and cool . it then mixes the hot and cold together and you get poor cooling and poor heating. you check it with a gage. fed law requires that you have an epa certification to apply a gage. low pressures in heat and cool on both high and low pressure gages are a sign of low charge. if low pressure and high pressure are close to the same on both gages then a good chance valve is stuck half way between. you can also sometimes check by feel . at the change over valve two lines should be virtually to hot to touch and two should be cold to the touch. one is heating flow and other is cooling flow. if the valve is stuck then temps will be within a few degrees of the same on all. low charge and the hot lines won't be hot hardly .and the cold line s barely cool. look for white frost forming in the heat mode outside at the condensor tubing shortly after you turn on the heat. thats a sign of low charge. good luck.
