Question about Dell Motherboard Dimension 4100 Intel 815 DP/N: 031REP 31REP 31REP

1 Answer

Computer won't post, and I'm getting no screen

I have a dimension 4100 that will not post. The monitor went blank when I was in the middle of something (just internet browsing), and now the machine will not post and the monitor never receives any input. I thought it might be the video card, but that shouldn't affect whether or not it posts. I've reset the bios, but I still am not getting anything. Is the motherboard totally fried?

I reset the bios by removing the battery overnight as well as clearing the memory via the jumper pins. The monitor always stays black and seems as though it is not receiving any input (it is plugged in and I've tried it on different monitors).

It doesn't post, and nothing shows up on the screen.

Thanks for all your help, but this computer is pretty much just shot and I let it go.

    Thanks again!

What i would do is remove all hardware connectors and cards from the motherboard and only leave the power supply and fan connections on. This will most likely allow you to boot the mother board. Remove the RAM as well. I'm aiming at the RAM is bad. But many things can have the same effect on the pc. If you have 2 sticks remove both and boot if you get lots of beeps it usually means it cant find the RAM or Video card. Attach 1 stick in and boot and will make a different beep code error. This prob means you dont have the video card put in the slot. It will not make a beep sound for video if u you onboard video.

Blank Screen

Common problem in monitors are bad caps in the power supply, that is the first place to check, look for bad caps with bulging top/bottom, see example of failed VIEWSONIC monitors due to bad caps here (worst case will be bad lamps): http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see so we can help you further.

1) Boot your PC
2) when the grub menu appears, use the down arrow to get to the menu option listed as (rescue system)
3) when the text-based menu appears, choose a menu option that gets you to the root shell, then following the instructions mentioned in this link: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/black-screen-while-starting-x-window.html. Debian instructions will work for Ubuntu.

Video problem on my Dell Dimension 4600 PC, HELP ASAP.

the resolution set by default when you load your graphics driver is outside the range of your monitors capability.

try starting in safe mode then adjust your resolution to 640 by 480 then restart.
if this works, adjust upwards to 1024 by 768
then up again till the screen blanks.
when it does, dont panic, wait 20 seconds and the settings will restore - you then have the optimum settings for your monitor.

good luck

MY MONITOR HAS A GREEN SCREEN

What I get from your post is that you have a green screen covering up your desktop, thus preventing you from doing anything on your PC. If this is what it is Spyware sounds like the issue which you can hold "CTL" and hit "F4" to close it and any other screens and I suggest you run this Free Antispyware: http://www.smcus.net/SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
Click the link or copy and paste it in your browser.
