Compatible ink cartridges not working

I have been using compatible CL 51 ink cartridges for some time with no problem. I bought a batch of 5 crtridges, the first was o.k. but the printer will now not recognise the rest. I have tried taking it out, rebooting computer and replacing it as suggested by the suppliers info sheet, but this hasn't helped. What can I do?

I have inspected the cartridges and I can find no difference in them at all.

    Hi Joed911,

Not sure what to do after I got into service mode as nothing further would happen, no matter what buttons I pressed or how many times. All I got was a plain piece of paper ejected by my printer.

  • lyndasimms May 28, 2009

It is not the level of ink meter which is the problem. The printer does not recognise the cartridge as the correct one to use. It is a compatible cartridge the same as I have used in the past with no problems. (I have a batch of 6 new cartridges and only one of them has worked.)

My printer is the Canon Pixma MX 300, not the MP210. Perhaps the service mode instructions are different than those suggested.

    Reset the EEPROM:

    Service Mode
This printer has a service mode for service-related settings and for performing test prints. The operator panel buttons are used to enter the desired service mode.
    Service Mode Operations
    1) With the printer powered off, hold down the resume button and press the power button.
    2) While holding down the power button, release the resume button and press the resume button twice in succession. Now release the power button. The
indicator will blink in green and remain lit in green.
    3) Select one of the following service mode functions by pressing the resume button the specified number of times.
    Press Resume Indicator Functions
Zero times Green Power off the printer
1 time Orange Service test print
2 times Green EEPROM information print
    3 times Orange EEPROM initialization
4 times Green Waste ink counter setting
    5 times Orange Destination settings
6 times Green Print head deep cleaning
7 times Green CD-R test print
8 times Orange CD-R print position correction (horizontal)
9 times Green CD-R print position correction (vertical)
    4) Execute the function you have selected (except for model setting) by pressing the power button. The printer will switch itself off after performing the function.

Let me know if it fixes the issue....

Take the one that worked and put it side by side with the one that did not work. Inspect them to see if there is a differrence : IE missing tab, missng ground, missing sensor.

I found this on a forumn,
To view the images mentioned , click on the link. It is in Dutch but it has been translated to the following steps.

To reset the ink level meters (method 1)
Note! These methods may not work on all cartridges. If method one does not work, try method 2 or just permanently deactivate the ink meters.

1. Place a thin strip of clear sticky tape to cover just the top horizontal row of contacts (image 1)
2. Reinstall cartridge and close cover.
3. The printer will now start moving, but wait until the display (on PC or printer??) shows that the "inkpatroon??" is installed incorrectly. Click OK.
4. Open the cover and remove the cartridge again.
5. Remove the tape and place it over the second row of contacts (image 2)
6. Reinstall the cartridge and close the cover. The printer will again move and eventually the display will show that the cartridge cannot be recognized. Click OK.
7. Remove the cartridge for the last time
8. Remove the tape, clean off any adhesive residue and reinstall the cartridge.
9. The printer will now show the cartridge as new and full.

Depending on the type of cartridge (color, black or photo) there may be more or less rows of contacts. Always cover the top or second row of contacts as indicated. (my, the translator's, note: In spite of what is says above, step 1 below says to cover the bottom row of contacts)

Resetting of ink level meters (method2)
Works poorly in some cases

1. Cover the bottom row of contacts with a thin strip of tape.
2. Reinstall cartridge and close cover.
3. The printer will now start moving, but wait until the display (on PC or printer??) shows that the "inkpatroon??" is installed incorrectly. Click OK.
4. Open the cover and remove the cartridge again.
5. Remove the tape and place it over the top row of contacts (image 1)

If a refilled cartridge still shows as empty, try removing both cartridges and use method 1 simultaneously on both cartridges.

Let me know if this helps.

Either the cartridge circuit is damaged or there is a problem with your printer. To make sure, you will have to try the cartridge on another similar printer. If it works on another printer, the problem lies with your printer.

How do I fix e07

I assume you have a Canon copier based on the E007 error code. The Fuser fixing film is torn and the Fixing film assembly or the entire fuser should be replaced. Very common issue.......You cannot reset that code without first replacing the part causing the code.

I bought some ink cartridges yesterday for my printer and got 510&511 combo pack for a MX320 only to get home and notice mine has 40&41 combo in it and is a MX310. Can I still use the 510&511...

That printer uses the following ink cartridges

PG-30
CL-31
(low capacity)

PG-40
CL-41
(normal capacity)

PG-50
CL-51
(high capacity)

The ink you purchased will not work on the Canon PIXMA MX310 printer.

Canon Pixma MP210 will not recognize high yield PG-50 & CL-51 cartridges.

The canon pixma mp 210 uses PG-30, CL-31, PG-40, CL-41
It will not recognized the PG-50 & CL- 51
See if you can return it and exchange it for the PG-40 & CL-41.
If not, the only other way is to transfer the ink into the other ink cartridges.
The cartridge cap can be removed by a sharp tap at the back end of the cover.
You can glue back the cover.
If there is an E 1,6 Error code, Ink has run out after you install your ink cartridges
Press and hold the stop/reset button for about 10 seconds to clear the error code.

Cl-41 to cl-51

You have ordered incompatible cartridges. You need CL38 (colour) and PG37 (black). They do not fit your machine. Send them back for a refund.

CL 51 Cartridge for IP1600

Canon's compatibility list says that the IP1600 will only take the low yield cartridges. The only way you could use a high yield one is if you buy a compatible (non genuine) cartridge and these are only the low yield cartridges filled to high yield levels anyway which is why it will work.

Good luck.
Please rate my advice, good or bad.
