Question about Dell XPS 400 Dual Core 2.8Ghz, 512MB, 160G, 128M ATI, DVDRW & DVDXPS400 PC Desktop

Video Card replacement seemed to cause further problems

After turning on the computer, it turned itself off and then on repeatedly. Received message that PCI express card is operating in X1 mode, but when I hit F2 it operated normally. Brought it to the shop, the next time it started to turn itself off and on again, they replaced the video card. But now I have no sound, and the CD/DVD drive can't read anything. Any idea what could be happening, I'm at a loss and wondering if the video card was even the problem to begin with

    Hi Nic,

Thanks for responding. I did manage to get sound again by using the Sigmatel HD audio codec which apparently came with the ATI PCI Radeon X300 SVGA card as the default audio, instead of my Creative SB X Fi . The shop never told me there would be any conflicts and never even tested my video to see if I had sound.I would like to use my Creative SB, but I'm not sure how to go about it.I have a Dell XPS 400 Windows Media Center Edition Service Pack 3. The original video card was a nVidia GeForce 6800 and I have a 16x DVD-ROM & 16 DVD+/-RW which is still not working. I did check in Device Manager and it claimed everything was working properly and the drivers were all up to date.Any insight you can provide is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Nic,

I tried but unfortunately downloading the drivers didn't seem to make a difference especially for the cd/dvd. I got error messages like no matched device detected, after I ran the downloads from Dell. I was able to get sound using the update for Creative SB, but the sound was only coming out of one speaker and then it stopped. There has to be some massive conflict going on, which I just can't find. Can't go back to the repair place, the owner let it be known he expects to be paid for any additional work that has to be done. The most he said he would do is check to see if any "wires" were out of place.I did let my credit card company know that I was contesting the charges and would only pay part of the overall cost. Anyway I do want to thank you for taking the time to try and solve the problem.

    Lois

    Hi!

It sounds like they uinstalled something that went wrong when the changed your gpu.

You probably need to reinstall the drivers for your soundcard and the drivers for your cd/dvd, i think that will solve your problem.

To help you find the correct drivers i need to know the model, the model numder and what OS you running on it. Give me those anwers and i will try to link you to the support site for your pc.

Hi again!

Ok, this it the supportsite for your pc:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=XPS/DIMENSION%20400/9150&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

The only thing is that there isent any mediacenter for that pc, so i thionk its better if you follow this link and enter the TAG number that on you pc, that will take you directly to all software and drivers that came on your pc:
http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&cs=28&l=en&s=dfb

Follow that link, select drivers & downloads, selcet enter the TAG,
Now type the tagnumber that you will find on your pc.
Dell will now give you all the drivers and the uppdates you need, i think a good idea is tho reinjtall the sound drivers, there are drivers for your cd/dvd for downlad also, install the to and se if the cd/dvd works, if it doesent work, take the pc back to the store and tell them that you want them to fic the problems they caused you,

Let me know how it goes M8!

Good luck
Nic

Hi again Lois M8! Sorry for the late answer

Wtf! is that shop owner dumb or something? thats NOT a proper way to handle customers! dont you have a law aginst bad repaires like that? here i sweden we do.

Tell him that you will go ta another store, and if the find out that the problem was caused by them you will not only reclaim your money back but also for al the truble that shop caused you, and that wont be cheap for them.

And yes, it seems to be a conflict somewere, but im not sure that it is a big one.

Anyway, i still think that it is that show duty to help you, when you left your pc to them is was working perfec, after you got it with a new gpu installed from them you have conflicts. no dubt about it! its their responsibilty to do a good work and test the pc before giving it back to you

This desktop dell vostro turns itself on and off without the button being pushed. sometimes it makes it to windows, and seems to run just fine, then it goes to shutdown by itself... then turns itself back...

Well in the system Bios or setup there are options where you can have the computer turn itself on automatically at a certain time. However, the fact that yours is turning itself on and off seems to indicate that it is either over heating or it is running into an issue when trying to boot and it keeps recycling the boot process. There is an option that you can set that will turn off automatic restart on boot. Turn off the computer and then turn it on and start hitting F8 repeatedly until you see Safe Mode as an option. Scroll down through the options and you will probably see an option that lets you stop automatic restart on boot, and take it if it is there. This will allow you to actually see the error message that is causing your computer to reboot itself.

When i switch on the monitor the on/off button blinks and i don't get a picture. johanalvemalm@people.net.au

Most monitors will behave that way if they don't get a signal from the computer so there's nothing to display. A quick check of the monitor itself is to disconnect the signal cable from the computer and then turn the monitor on. Most monitors will display some kind of a message that there's no input and to check your cable connection. Then the power indicator changes color as the monitor blanks out.

You will probably find that your computer isn't starting up when you turn on the power. A common computer problem is that it will turn on when you press the power button, showing a power light and you'll hear the fans inside start running, but it never actually starts running. Then there's no video to the monitor and you see the trouble you described.

The monitor may still be bad. If everything seems to be starting normally and you hear the Windows startup sound through your speakers, but the display stays blank, try another monitor. If that one works, you'll need to have the bad one serviced or replace it. If the test monitor is also blank, the video circuitry in your computer has failed. If the video is built into the motherboard, you can install a plug-in video card as a replacement.

If the computer is turning on but never starts running, that can be a pain to figure out because several things can cause the trouble. The most frequent causes are a bad power supply or motherboard. Bad RAM or a defective drive or other device connected to the motherboard can also keep the board from starting up. The processor itself can fail, but that's not common. I start by removing everything except for the power supply, processor and fan to see if the motherboard is starting. If the motherboard doesn't give a "no memory" error (usually a long beep), you need a power supply or motherboard. Otherwise, the basic hardware is fine, and you can start replacing parts until the trouble comes back, and then you'll know what caused it.

Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

Have moved and connected back up, Monitor message in middle of screen OUT OF RANGE

check the cable ..to be connected in the right post ..if you have a video card and a on board card ..you might connected it by mistake in the on board card port ..and this one is disabled cause you have another card on a Pci port...
another issue may be from the plug itself...try to move them cause this message is received only when it do not gets signal

My monitor turns into color pattern screen after on for just a few minutes. Have to reboot but repeats the problem. It is an Acer notebook aspire

Video Card problem sir. This can be caused by the video card problem but worst, the hardware itself. Try going to the device manager.
CLick the Diplay adapter
Then right click your video card then uninstall.

You might notice that the resolution of your display is bad but if the problem doesnt show up meaning you need to download a new driver for your video card..

If that doesnt work... you need to let a technician check your vcard.

Hope the first one helps

Samsung GH19LS LCD Monitor wont display computer signals

You should have received two cables with the monitor. One is for VGA and plugs into you video card or computer board . The second one is for DVI digidal video and if you have that cable it plugs into the square connector. Then if you look into your monitor manual or quick setup sheet it will tell you how to connect and set the monitor to either VGA or Digital. I'm sure that is what has to be set. Don't hook up both cables to the monitor and computer. Only use the one. Digital gives you a better picture if your computer has that function. Hope this is helpful. Bud

If it's only a few months old then send it back under warranty.
The fault you have is the inverter circuit.

Hope that helps. =)
