Question about Washing Machines

3 Answers

My '02 Maytag Neptune FAV6800A didn't spin. Changed clutch one month ago. Worked great. Won't spin again but tumblers rotate with wierd grinding-like noise. Per SM,clutch the culprit. Swapped in new clutch. No change: no spin action with tumblers rotating in spin cycle. What' the deal? Thanks. Signed, Outofideas.

Atch'd is pic of my control board. I could not locate the R11 resistor and did not not any "burned areas. The board pic in the parts link looks different than mine. Am I on the right track? Outofideas.

  • nickandlinda May 27, 2009

I believe that the board I have in my model does not have an R11 resistor. It has R3,4,5,12, and 18. I can't find any burning anywhere on the board. If there is, it is subtle. You mentioned about the lid locks. My model has one on each side of the lid both appear to be working fine. Any alternate suggestions? Thank you.

Ginko - Is it possible I've installed the clutch assembly incorrectly? Appears straight forward: line it up, torque the bolt that holds it in, reinstall drive belt. The first clutch I installed worked great at first. Just prior to it spinning, the tumblers would rotate about and 1/8 to 1/4 turn, then the tub would spin. Now the tumblers just rotate. It never gets to the spin action. Thoughts? This is my first encounter w/FixYa. Do I rate you guys when I accept the solution? How does that work. Thanks.

Hi

You need to check the drive belt if its connected fine.

Drive Belt Removal
1. Disconnect power supply to unit.
2. Lift Top Cover.
3. Remove Front Panel.
4. Roll Drive Belt off Pulley. (Do not loosen motor bolts).

After that check the clutch--

Pulley/Clutch Removal
1. Disconnect power supply to unit.
2. Lift Top Cover.
3. Remove Front Panel.
4. Loosen Drive Motor Tension Bolt.
5. Remove Drive Belt.
6. Remove Pulley Bolt.
7. Remove Pulley.
NOTE: When reinstalling, properly seat Pulley with a
1/16-1/8" gap between the Pulley face and shaft
end. On reinstallation, tighten Pulley Bolt to 96
inch pounds.

Please tell me your email address so that i can email you the service manual for your washer.

Please do accept this solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Check if noise is coming from TRANSMISSION ASSY and ensure the noise is not just coming from a bad drum bearing.

Double check clutch assembly and have a look at the bolts securing the variable speed motor.

You can find all parts and diagrams for your model here.

Do not forget to leave feedback.

Thanks.

During the spin cycle the door lock light would come on and the main motor would run, but the washer just would not take off and spin.

This is often a simple and easy repair, but not cheap. You can help save yourself some money by doing the repair yourself. The first thing you will want to do is disconnect the power to the washer. Simply unplug the power cord.

Next remove the three screws on top of the control counsel. With the three screws removed you will be able to tip the control panel forward and look at the electronic control board behind the timer.

Most often then not the resistor marked R-11 is burnt up. If this is the case you will need to replace the machine control board.

The reason the R-11 resistor burnt up is because the wax motor in the door lock is also bad, so you will need to replace it too.

This same “No Spin” problem also happens with the MAH4000 series Maytag Neptune washers."

If you replace only the R11 and not the Q6 triac then R11 will smoke again and you can cause further damage to the control board. The Q6 triac must be replaced when R11 burns!

The http://www.appliancejunk.com/ forum does not know this because they are not experts on the Maytag Neptunes. I also don't like how they hide the real Maytag part numbers so you can't compare prices... This is deceptive marketing and usually indicates their prices are inflated.

You can get the R11 and Q6 repair kit along with the wax motor at http://www.neptunewaxmotor.com/.

If after you replace the R11 and Q6 and the machine will not fill with water then the control board will have to be replaced (along with the 12002535 wax motor) You can order a new control board here http://www.neptunewaxmotor.com/page6.html.

Here are some control board numbers:

MAH3000 serial number starting with (10 to 16) - 12001725
MAH3000 serial number starting with (17 and up) - 22002988
MAH4000 - 22002989
MAH5500AWW - 22002989

If you have a 2000 stacker series please contact me and I can look up your control board part number.

Don't forget that the older MAH3000's have two more wax motors in the dispenser area that will eventually fail, too. If your serial number starts with (26) then you should be OK since Maytag incorporated the bleach and softener functions into the water valve assembly.

Thank You

I feel you need fix the root cause a Leaky Tub Seal.

Google this

FAV6800A/FAV9800A Outer Tub bearing replacement

See what is involved and iff you decide to go forward I will help on that forum. This forum is just to difficult to work in with no edit feature.

The Clicking sound may be a broken Large Wrap spring.

Place the washer with a load in the wash basket start a Spin Only cycle and release the washer top jus high enough to observe wash basket Spin action. There may be none to very little. If you drop the Clutch Pulley out I believe you will find much rust. You have to replace that tub seal and I would do a complete outer tub rebuild. Without replacing the Clutch Pulley around $60 for bearings, Tub and Seal Tranny O-ring.

Review the post

Kelly,
“”Yesterday it started again with the same dc codes. Noticed this time that it was banging all 4 sides of the machine during the wash cycle.””
Can you do a Quick Wash cycle with minimal settings Soil Level and Spin settings with an empty wash basket.
So after water fill if you raise the top of the machine and observe the Wash Basket you should see the tumblers rotating only. I think from your description you may observe the Wash Basket rotating CW and the tumblers rotating…..is that happening in Wash/Agitate cycle?

If that is so it seems to me that the Spinner Shaft Coupler (my name for it) is seized into the Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches Bearing in the Clutch Mounted One-Way Roller Clutches bearing mounted in the white bearing plate. And or the Upper One-Way Roller Clutches bearing ring if you Series 12 machine does use the Upper Bearing ring. I know the Series 10 and 11 use that upper bearing ring.
Does you Series 12 FAV6800A Clutch Pulley use the Upper One-Way Roller Clutches bearing ring?

Have you used my Clutch Fix post for reference on maintenance and or replacement of the FAV6800A/FAV9800A? In that post I have a comment labeled “”Let’s demystify dC and uC error codes plaguing the FAV6800A and the LCD Flavor FAV9800A””
I would drop your Clutch Pulley out and verify that the Spinner Shaft Coupler will rotate CW &CCW in both the Clutch Pulley One-Way Roller Clutches bearing white bearing plate and the Upper bearing ring if you machine does use that upper bearing ring.
If you can let me know the results? I will try to help…..Rich

Spin Cycle has stopped at 13 minutes Code dc.

If your machine is a FAV6800A to FAV9800A here is the Service Manual.

If it one of those machines I suspect a possible clutch malfunction. See this post for what is involved to do clutch maintenance or replacement.

Thank you for posying your model number.

I believe you may have debris under the tumblers maybe pocket change. Removing tumblers is a fairly easy job. I would start there and see what you find. A number of forum members have had this issue.

The Service manual has the procedure for tumbler removal starting on page 3. It’s not difficult to remove them the manual doesn’t call out the Torx driver size required for tumbler removal. You will need a number 20 Torx driver to remove the screw for tumbler removal.

I have a procedure for clutch maintenance/repair for the FAV6800A/FAV9800A. I have helped a number of owners with the process. The other high failure item is the Left Hand Lid Lock causing OP,OD,FL errors. I or someone on the forum will help with other issues.

Post back if you have questions….Rich

Maytag neptune tl makes grinding sound and stops at 33 minutes in normal mode and at 24 minutes in quick wash mode

Hello djlampl,

With the lowest spin cycle setting I enter spin cycle in Quick Wash around the 21 minute mark. But first question is do you hear the grinding noise with the tumblers rotating during the wash/agitate cycle?

If you start a spin only cycle do you hear the grinding noise?

Does the washer error code out with an error code to the display? Codes such as dC, uC, Lr?, I assume the machine type is a FAV6800AW is that correct?

Any additional info will help in troubleshooting…..Rich

Assuming the machine type is a FAV6800A/FAV9800A here are some handy links;

Maytag Neptune Tl FAV6800A stuck in wash cycle

Hello rockhead255 ,

I'm an owner like you and will try to help.

Error code 10 states Unbalance or cabinet hit detected during final spin, which prevented the spinner from exceeding 500 rpm

Did you notice if you took some large tub swings as the washer tried to spin up?

I suspect a Clutch malfunction. Pump the water out of the tub with the Board Output Test with the drain pump in service mode. With the wash tub empty open the lid and see if you can rotate the wash basket CCW with one finger. You mentioned “”Tub does not turn by hand””. Is that in the CCW direction?

You should be able to rotate the wash basket with your pinky finger with very little force. The wash basket will not rotate CW. What amount of rotational resistance do you detect in the CCW direction? With the error 10 reported I would drop the clutch out of the machine per my step by step procedure at this post. Try the One-Way roller clutch bearing clean up and re-lube as I discuss in that post and see if you can restore the machine to normal Spin operation. Once you drop the clutch out of the machine we will have a better feel for the issue.

You can try the TDS check in the SM but I feel it is a Clutch issue at this point of troubleshooting. Good troubleshooting using the machines diag code listing.

Post back if you havd need additional questions or help.

Hello acelmo3,

Thank you for the model number, can you give me the first two digits of your serial number. That number is located on the back right side of the console. I only need the first two digits.10, 12, 16,,,etc.

Let's try to troubleshoot the grinding noise issue, You mention the spin cycle. Have you taken any dc or UC errors in spin cycle? Can you try the following and let me know what you find?

1. Open the lid and rotate tie wash basket by hand Counter Clock Wise, CCW. The wash basket should rotate freely with no restriction. The wash basket will not rotate Clock Wise, CW by hand.

2. Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. Raise the top of the machine to observe the wash basket and tumbler action described in step 2. (See page 33 of the Service Manual for putty knife insertion point). Also see pic attached.

3. With the top raised start a Spin Only cycle with no clothes in the wash basket, observe the wash basket it will begin to rotate CCW. Watch the tumblers, they should not rotate in spin cycle (maybe ½ turn at the start of spin cycle and that’s all). If the tumblers rotate while the wash basket is rotating you have a clutch malfunction and the Spin Cycle will fail with dc/UC errors. If this is not the situation move on to step 3. This is what I refer to as a soft failure and possible clean up of the clutch roller bearings in the clutch hub may restore normal clutch operation. A hard failure would be the clutch spring has failed, the roller bearings are rusted beyond clean up. A replacement clutch is required.

Pic attached for top cover removal .

Let me know if you see the tumblers rotating in Spin Only cycle and if yo hear the grinding noise. Rich

Maytag neptune fav6800aww wont spin on rinse cycle

With this post I’m attempting to enhance the troubleshooting process regarding dc/UC errors in Spin Cycle associated with the FAV6800A machine. The troubleshooting steps are more to help DIY owners but it could be good info. for other owners to pass along to their appliance repair service if you go forward with a repair. I’m a DIY’er who refused to junk my machine as long as parts cost did not trigger a replacement decision and I have some basic mechanical skills. What I have learned about these fail codes, dc/UC in Spin Cycle is…. this is a chronic failure condition associated with the FAV6800A series machine (no brainer per numerous posts in this forum) and I feel that most of the time these codes are associated with a clutch malfunction.
The troubleshooting guide packed in the console of your machine makes reference to this issue in the Will Not Spin section of the guide and states to replace the clutch. I re-lubed my clutch with WD-40 and I have been working with 30+ loads of varying size with no Spin Cycle errors since early December 08. I and two other DIY forum members found this issue to be a maintenance issue with the clutch, no out of pocket cost for me and I’m sure under $5 for the other two forum members, I had a can of WD-40 in the house. See the links I have attached within this post. There is a description of the clutch removal I did in those posts. I hope this works for others; I’m sure many of these machines head to the curb for bulk trash pickup. Maybe you can extend the service life of your $1K machine if this proves to be a clutch re-lube fix for this issue. Shame on Maytag for not placing a quality sealed bearing in the clutch…. my opinion.
1. Raise the top of the machine. Insert a flat blade putty knife approximately 2.5” from the left and right sides of the washer top, depress the spring tabs securing machine top to the washer base. Raise the top of the machine to observe the wash basket and tumbler action described in step 2...

2. I need to post step 3 and the rest of this post in a comment.
