Freezer only gets down to around 18 degrees but fridge is fine. No frost on the freezer evaporator fan is running

Modern consumer refrigerators only have coils in the freezer. In the lower back of the freezer there is a small fan and possible a damper (flap that opens/closes) to push cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator. Given that the freezer is 18 deg, it's probably cold enough to keep the fridge area at typically 34 deg.
So the cooling system (compressor, coils, thermostat) are not working properly to keep the freezer at, typically 0 deg. Possible causes: partial loss of refrigerant gas, icing around evaporator coils (in freezer), compressor failing, dust clogging condenser coils (under fridge), condenser fan clogged or broken (under fridge), thermostat failure.
I'd start with condenser. Remove the slotted trim at the bottom front and look in with a flashlight. Are the coils clean? Pull out the fridge and remove the lower back cover (usually cardboard). You can now see the coils and fan. Clean and blow them out.
If it's icing, it probably means freezer door not closing tight. If auto-defrost not working properly it would probably get worse over the period of a few days so not likely.

The Refrigerator's Freezer is not working but the fridge is, what is wrong?

You probably have one compressor that cools the freezer section and the refrigerator section. Usually the freezer gets cooled directly with the cooling coils. A fan blows cool air to the refrigerator section. The air flow to the refrigerator may be modulated with some time of "air door". What you have written says to me, is that the fans and air doors are working but there is enough cold for the refrigerator but not enough for the freezer.

Here is what I would do:
  1. Put a thermometer in the refrigerator and in the freezer.
  2. Be sure the coils underneath or behind the refrigerator are clean. If they are very dirty, clean them.
  3. Keep the doors shut for at least 12 hours and then read the thermometers and write down the temperatures.
  4. Freezer temperature
    1. If the freezer has started freezing again, you fixed it by cleaning the coils
    2. .If the freezer temperature is between 0 deg F and 32 deg F, consider putting the food in a cooler and packing in some dry ice to try and save it.
    3. If the freezer is warmer than 32 deg f, throw away the food.
    4. Doctors and hospitals are pretty expensive. I would throw away the food no matter what the thermometer read.
  5. Look inside the freezer at the cooling coils. See if they are ice coated or not.
    1. If the freezer is above 0 deg F, and the coils are ice covered, the defrost control is not working. Unplug the refrigerator for 12 hours and let the ice melt. (Keep the doors shut.) Then, plug in the refrigerator for 12 hours and check the temperature like in step 3.
    2. If the freezer is above 0 deg F, and the coils are NOT ice covered, the compressor is not working.
  6. Call the service technician. When she comes out show her the temperatures and tell her what you found out about the ice on the coils.
Good luck

We have Kenmore Model 7018 2000 and we have water inside the refrig on the shelves on top and on the very bottom. Don't know where to begin to look.

The evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the inside of the freezer at the bottom of the rear cover.

Refridgerator side is set to 34 but temp reads 52 last night freezer was at 20 when set to 0 cleaned coil of dust now reads 0 but fridge side still wont come down it is a GE side by side

your evaporator coil in the freezer behind the rear panel is iced up and cold air cant flow thru ice, defrost the evaporator coil, then check continuity of the heater element under the coil,if its good, then suspect the defrost control, usually located in the refrige side on the upper area

My refrigerator is at 48 deg but the freezer is very cool

your damper vent door located between the freezer and refrige compartment isnt opening all the way or the evaporator coil in the freezer is iced over and the evaporator fan cannot blow air across these coils to send it to the refrigerator, then you either have a defrost heater open and not heating or the defrost control may be defective

I have heard of it but it is very new. 300 is cheap for an evaporator change out. That maybe ok on labor but figure on adding the price of the part.

Kenmore fridge and freezer not cooling

Check to see if there is any ice built up on the back wall of the freezer. If so thaw the ice and take the back wall out of the freezer. next check to see if the fan is running in the freezer (evaporator fan) This fan is what circulates the air from the freezer to the fridge. If it does run then you have a defrost problem (if ice is on the coils and back wall). Then replace defrost timer, heater, and thermostat.

GE side by side Refrig. with evaporator iced up solid.

Yes ill be glad to help John. Your refrigerant level is fine. Remove the motherboard axcess panel on rear of refrig. Locate 3 wire blue plastic connector on bottom of board. Wires are labeled Comp, Line, Def. Jump Line to Def and see if heater gets hot. If nothing happens than replace the heater. Let me know what happens.
