Question about Toshiba 50A61 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence is off in the lower right and upper left corner

I noticed this morning that the convergence is off (significantly crooked) in the lower right-hand corner and upper left-hand corner. I tried to adjust, but the convergence 'cross' is out of whack as well. After playing with different adjustments for awhile, it suddenly fixed itself. Then I was fine tuning the convergence and it went crooked again. Any suggestions or ideas?

I called a local repair man earlier. He suggested that that problem was the power pack that supplies voltage to each tube/gun. Is this the same thing you have suggested or something different?

  • mac_deal May 23, 2009

I don't think the repair man was suggesting changing the board. He said there was one 'power pack' per color and he suggested doing all three while in there. Could he be talking about the covergence amps or ICs....I think these are the same thing. Is fixing the covergence amps/ICS the procedure shown in the link you sent?

Learning as I go here.....thanks for your help!

What is your recommedation on the resistors? Check, change, do nothing?

I've read several different places that you may want to change the resistors at the same time as the ICs. If so, how do you know which to change....there seem to be many different?

The repair isn't too complicated if you're comfortable working with a soldering iron. Sounds like one of the "guns" is shot. The chips that need replacing are attached to the heatsink on the convergence board. The reason for replacing both chips is if you're going to bother to take the board out and replace one bad chip, that is the best time to replace the other older chip. The link below is to step by step instructions including pictures of the repair. You can check it out to see if you want to try it. If not, the repair is expensive (between 250-400) depending on the repairman. Best of luck with your convergence problem.

I really don't think so. I think one of the guns Red or Blue (Red seems to go first for some reason) is on its way out. The reason the repair is so expensive is most repairmen take the easy way out and order a new convergence board which is very expensive because it's much easier to install a new board instead of removing the bad chips and replacing them. I'm not a TV repairman by trade but I'm having my doubts about the info you received. Unfortunately, once you ask a repairman into the house to diagnose the problem, you're kinda married to him. (only thing missing is the best man and justice of the peace! LOL) You should get a second opinion if you have doubts but I'd take a look at the link I sent you. Wish you all the best m'friend and thank you for rating my solution. Much appreciated. : )

Okay, I guess the repairman was using different teminology but we were talking about the same thing. As far as I know, there are only 2 chips or power packs but I guess we're on the same page. I'm glad he's talking about replacing the STK's and not the whole board. It requires about 2 hours labor and the parts themselves are about $30. He will also check the board for faulty resistors. Good job doing your homework before picking up the phone. Most people tend to panic where their Big Screen is concerned! : ) Hope all turns out well. I'd be interested in knowing how you make out. All the best!

If you are having a repairman come in and do the repair, he should check the resistors for conductivity. Basically you check each one with a voltage meter. Only bad resistors should be changed. To change them all would take so much time and labor that a new board would work out cheaper. I'm sure in your case the IC's are the only repair needed but the repairman should do a check on the resistors while he has the board out.

This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Convergence ICs are no doubt faulty and you could have a couple of open resistors near the Convergence ICs also. You can get the ICs and or resistors at this link.

Blue Convergence just went out?

High Voltage Capacitor? Leave the set unplugged for 1/2 hour most components will selfdischarge, as for your problem, being a Magnavox, you have one of two problems, the convergence I suspect is what is blown out, this unit probably uses STK392-110 Ic's, I would suggest replacing with STK394-160e chips as they are probably shorted, some of the big resistors (1 or 2) may be opened up also, usually they change color. The only other thing that would cause usually a yellow color in the corners is the CRT Fluid, it changes from clear to Orange in color and clamps off the blue color from the fringes, I suspect the chips need replacement, dont forget to put some heatsink dope behind them, they are usually on the left in the front of the set (from the back) Big long heatsink that is fairly tall (probably the biggest heatsink in the set.) Good luck, and the repair usually runs around $350.

Green colors are seperated from rest

You might have a bad green convergence output IC either loose from the circuit board or open internally OR shorted. Stargazer
