Question about Washing Machines

3 Answers

I have a Kenmore front loader, about 8 years-old. Everything seems to be working except the drum won't spin. The light comes on, tt fills with water and drains, it sounds as if it's going through its cycles but the drum never spins! I've checked the belt, it looks fine and when I pull on it the motor spins smoothly but it still doesn't run. My (outdated) home repair book suggests it could be either the door switch (which I can get to) or some kind of "overload" switch. It's supposed to be on the motor but I can't even find it. The model number is 41729042992. Can you help me.

The first "expert" that responded to my question gave me a long list of possible solutions based on a generic (top-loader). My washer is a "front loader". I know that a variety of things might cause it not to work, the question is, what would cause everything to work but the motor. The belt looks fine and easily turns the motor and the drum when I rotate it manually.

    Can you help me.

    This is your last chance!

I have posted the same question regarding my Kenmore FRONT LOADING washer. Everything works (i.e .lights on, water in, water out, belt intact, etc.) except that the motor won't come on and spin the drum.

For $15 I expect an answer that is relevant to my FRONT LOADER, not the standard response pertaining to a top loader.

Can you help me or not?

I don't know if you received my thank you note but, if not, I'll thank you again now.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to access the link with diagnostic suggestions that you provided me. So here are my follow-up questions:

    1. Is there any simple means to differentiate between the door switch and the control board?

    2. What and where is the control board? Do you have a part number on it?

    3. Is there a site where I can access a schematic that might display the control board?

Generally the speed control board is the problem with these machines if the door lock is good. You can order the parts from http://www.repairclinic.com
and if for some reason the part isn't the problem, it is returnable to the website but since you checked the motor and nothing is frozen up, then the board is the next thing to check or just try replacing.

If you want to try testing some parts before ordering a new board then go to this tech sheet => ftp://ftp.electrolux-na.com/ProdInfo_PDF/Webster/134105100.pdf
and under motor movement go through the steps. You may also have this sheet already with your paperwork or in the machine itself.

Let me know if you have any further questions

Hi,

The lid-switch (the one which gets pressed when you shut the lid) was broken.Alternatively I found out the lid-switch can be ordered from sears.com.

This is a common issue with all kenmore models starting with 417.xxxxxxx

Hi,
We recommend the following checks when the drum doesnt spin

  1. Test the lid switch
  2. Test the timer control
  3. Test the centrifugal switch
  4. Test the water level switch
  5. Inspect the motor coupler
  6. Inspect the drive belt (belt drive only)
  7. Inspect under the washer for soot (clutch)
  8. Test the motor
  9. Inspect the pulley
  10. Test the transmission
You can click on the highlighted words for more info on how to check them.

Frigidaire front loader washing machine won't spin...

The problem is a faulty Door Latch Assembly. The same thing happened to my Frigidaire front load washer. The part is easy to install, costs about 60 dollars and can be picked up at most appliance repair stores . To access the switch just remove the wire around the front drum gasket, peel back the rubber gasket beside the switch assembly then remove the two screws holding it in place. remove the three wire connector blocks and swap in the new switch. My washer was giving me error code 41 witch is a faulty control board. But the problem was in fact only the switch...

Clanking noise during spin cycle

I was told by 3 technicians that my washer had shot bearings and this is a common problem for the Kenmore Elite Front loader.

Sears knows it and will not do anything about it except try to sell you a new washer since it costs $800 to replace the unit with the bearings.

Front loader washing machine = black streaks on clothing

I am a recently retired engineer of 20 years once you have ruled out anything getting inside the machine by accident etc, like something in pockets or greasy overalls, then its likely to be the drum bearings, has the machine started to get noisy on the spin the drum bearings are covered by a rubber seal, this seal gets damaged or worn and water leaks into the bearings themselves washing out the grease back into the drum where the washing is, you could also notice slight water marks on the floor underneath the machine on the floor, take the back off and look for water marks coming from the drum outer casing behind the pulley, these marks will be brown and will originate from a small drain hole, if any of the above change the bearings before any real damage is done, either to the clothes or the machine, as repair can be expensive? sorry, hope i have helped you as to where to look at least,
