Hello I bought a PS3 from a big seller on eBay, the item is refurbished. Please bear with me as I am a non-techie and non-gamer, thanks.
The PS3 boots up into what appears to be the set up mode, with all the functionality listed at the top of the screen, i.e. music, video, games, users, etc...
When I insert a game or dvd (both dvd and blueray) it doesnt do anything, it just keeps showing the same screen with all the icons on it. I have pushed in and out the games and dvd a hundred times, once in a fifty, it will show the title of the game briefly, then sends me to an error screen which says 'error at startup-error 8001050F'
Please help if you guys can, my son is here for the holidays (age 7) and is very disappointed in his new system. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Re: Used PS3 will not recognize or play games or dvds
The dvd drive has a bad laser in it more then likely. Thats why it doesn't matter what disc your putting in so either the laser would be replaced or a whole new drive put in.
I would notify the seller on Ebay and get the system swapped out with another one or get your money back. Refurbished systems mean that something was wrong with it and parts were swapped out or either repaired down to component level. Sometimes the technician doesn't check out the system fully and thats why you can run into the problem that you have now.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

I dealt with one such problem, it was an issue with the blu-ray drive itself, and the drive needed to be replaced. If you're willing to go that route, I'd suggest disassembling the ps3 Tutorial: http://www.llamma.com/PS3/repair/PS3_disassembly_tutorial.htm Video Tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW5ZmRVp8_E
locate the model number of the blu-ray drive, and start scouring ebay for refurbished drives. Prepare to spend 40-115 dollars.
This particular ebay seller will take the time to talk with you over the phone about which specific blu-ray drive you have and will need.
the blu ray player uses a magnified lens ( likely used in ps3 games
too) which is not used when playing ps2 or regular dvds...why they
work, any spec or suface wear to the lens will cause the system not to
read the discs) , a cleaning disc wont work as
the ps3 wont recognize what it is and not play it... only solution i
found was to send in for service , which costs @ 150 bucks! I hope this helps
ok I got your problem very clear I do sell bluray drives on ebay and I do buy lasers from china but I don't sell then on ebay I use them for my own playstations I do fix then and I do sell some of then on ebay and some here where I live and let me tell you what is going on your problem is with your laser yes it still be your laser I know you replaced it but the laser you get is not a new laser no matter what the seller tell you is not new is a second hand laser from china and some lasers are like that they do play blurays but they don't play regular dvd's some they do play regular dvds but they don't play blurays or games some they do play all type of media I been lucky in getting those second hand because I have order so far 60 lasers and only 4 out of 60 are like this so what you have to do is take the laser out again and contact the person who sell it to you tell him what is going on I am sure he knows that this can happen and don't worry about getting a second hand laser because no body can get new ones exept sony thrust me I have friends in china and sony is getting the lasers from china also but they get then new and all no matter who sell then on ebay all are second hand so don't belive what they say because a lot of sellers are saying that there lasers are new and they are not if he returns your money get back to me I can get you a good one that plays everything
Hi my name is Juan and here is the answer to your problem I undestand that you have replaced the laser but belive me your problem is with your laser again you got a diffected laser why I know this because I do sell used playstations on ebay I do fix them and I do normally buy lasers by a large quality I don't sell lasers on ebay but I do sell all other parts and some of the lasers I purchase they only play regular dvd's others only bluray dvds and games others only games and others nothing and the problem with ebay sellers is that they say that the lasers are new and the true is they are not they are second hand lasers if you have the kes400aaa they are not new the only new laser you can get on ebay is the kes410a but this laser is for the newer playstations like the new 80Gb the new 160Gb some of the kes400aaa that you buy at ebay or any other place they are good and they do play all types of disks bluray movies, games regular dvds so if I get a difected laser I send it back and they give me credict for it this is why every playstation I sell on ebay I do check the ps3 to make sure it plays all types of cds try to contact the person or company who sell it to you and let them know what is happening thanks and good luck (rate my help)
if your ps3 plays regular dvds and playstation 2 games but not blurays is most likely that your system needs a new laser lens not the whole bluray drive people tink that they do need to replace the whole bluray drive to fix this problem but all you need to do is replace the bluray laser lents it is cheaper but people replace the complete bluray drive because it is easer I am a ebay thrusted seller and I do sell both the laser or the bluray or use playstations so this is why I know your problem verry good you can do this your self or have some one installed for you or I you can send the bluray drive to me and I can sell you just the laser and installed for you there is a lot of options on this hopefully I have solve or a least help you in your problem thanks
same old story, that everybody knows, now knows.. i'm on my second ps3 because of the disc reading problem. Luckly, i was able to exchange it through circuit city because it was within 30 days of purchase. Now, my second ps3 did the same thing, and yes, it's under the 30 period from the time i exchanged the first one. so, i guess i'll be returning this one too. I tried a full system restore, which took wayyy tooo looong, but to no avail. It's kinda funny, but the first time i had this problem i was able to talk to a playstation customer service person regarding this problem, but the second time this happened i wasn't able to speak with a customer service person. There was a recording instead," Because of the HIGH customer service volume, please call back at a later time" LMAO.. that's a bunch of BS!! Sony is starting to piss me off. Will get refund for this peice of *&^%%$, and buy an XBOX360.. Failure to resolve this problem before production is unexcusable, and failure to address or have a fix for this problem is just as bad. I'm starting to think that Sony already knew of this problem, but released the defects anyway.. Dam sony bean counters thought it more 'cost effective' to handle problems after consumer purchase.. FK THAT
The problem with that is the PS3 that you bought is tuned for Japanese dvds and games, You may have to get your PS3 modded to support the French games. However I am unaware of the legality of having your PS3 modded.
