I found a manual online and it says that the HS and SF code mean that there is a problem with the temperature sensor.  I think that is correct because initially the heater fired up with no problem but we could not set the temp as we had last year.  I think we need to get the sensor replaced.  Does that make sense to you

Hi there,

Hayward Pool Heater Fails to Ignite: the most common reason for this problem is insufficient gas supply. The Hayward heater LED display will show a diagnostic fault code which stands for Ignition Failure. Undetected gas pressure problems if not investigated properly may result in unnecessary replacement and servicing of your Hayward Pool Heater.

Hope this initial info helps.

Let me know for further clarifications.

I have a H250 heater that is showing CE, communication error, what do you check first after you have shut it off at the breaker for a few minutes as suggested by owners manual?

If you have a remote controler you should check to be sure all connections to and at thr controler are sound then check all other connections on the heater itself. Check all the wireing and examine your board for any burnt spots or cracks. Some codes you get (this being one) will be kind of catch all's. Although a good place to start is the connections, this could be anywhere in the electric system. Good luck.

H250 inground pool heater turns on 5 seconds shuts off flsahing 1f

This is a code for ignition falure. If you are getting a pilot then it means your Ignition module is not sensing the flame and shuting the gas down. This could be pilot wire burnt and grounding or a pilot flame not reaching the sensor or a bad ignition module. This is the expensive part so look into the other things first. Good luck.

Pilot will not stay lit after button release

most likely you have a thermopile that has low output. it takes about 100mv to maintain pilot light

H250 cycles on and off pressure is fine. system normal light on. new sand and clear pool. would like to know how to fix problem myself.

I would probably look at your high limit switches first and then at the bypass assembly inside of the header. The bypass controls the heat rise inside the heater. If it is bad, it may heat up too quickly, opening up one of your high limits. That will shut down the heater, once it cools back down, it will start again, and so on and so on.

Hayward H250 giving me a "LO" error code and does not turn on.

9 times out of ten this means that you have a faulty water pressure switch. It could also be a limit switch, or air pressure switch. Make sure the filter is cleaned, and all valves are in the correct position. Once you are CERTAIN that water is flowing through the heater, you will need to short each individual component to find the faulty one.
