Question about Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook
My Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop is almost two years old. I just got it from my sister a few months ago, and seemed it was in pretty good condition. However, now nothing seems to work right. The CD/DVD won't write anything to discs, i.e., it doesn't respond when I tell it to burn CDs, DVDs, or write files to any sort of disc. When I plug my Zune mp3 player up to the USB, it won't recognize it. It's really strange too, because the Zune charges and everything and the Zune program starts up, but in the program it will say that no device is hooked up to the computer, so I can't put songs on or take them off.
Whenever I try to save big files (example: for school I had to make a video, and the following occured when I tried to save the file on Movie Maker) the computer just shuts off. In fact, it shuts off randomly a lot. I always assumed it was overheating, but sometimes it shuts off after literally two minutes of being on. It also shuts off when I try to use the webcam, or when I use Windows Media Player for more than like 20 minutes or so.
In addition, a few days ago I tried to do a virus-scan (I use McAfee, btw), and it said that it wouldn't work because ''Scan has failed to start. Result= 2147467259.'' I looked through the McAfee program for more clues behind this odd behavior, and found some extremely vague message about my ability to scan having been ''disabled.'' What???
I'm sure there are a billion more problems than that with this crappy thing, but those are the main ones that are driving me crazy at the moment.
Sorry...I must sound really whiney I know...computers just frustrate me so much; they never seem to work right!!!!

I've seen computers act this way before. It's an unusual thing, to be sure, but still, if you are having this many problems with hardware devices (the exception is McAfee in your post) the likelihood is, it's not hardware at all, but a software issue.
My recommendations to you would be to completely reload the OS. In doing this, you will encounter some difficulty when you try to use stuff again, unless you properly install all the drivers.
You may lose your McAfee product, so be aware of that. Also, any software that is not included in the operating system will be lost and must be reloaded. This includes, but is no way limited to, MS Office (Word), Zune software, any Adobe products MS Works (these are the most common.)
