At start up, the screen freezes, white with a gray apple insignia, and a timer that never stops

I have a macbook pro, from about 2007. A friend gave it to me to look at. All that happens when I turn it on, is the apple insignia comes on, then a timer that never ends. HELP!!!

After disabling the programs, reboot the computer and see if it goes into the MAC OS.

Try to see if you can get into safe mode. To get in there will depend on the Mac OS you have:

Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the
Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the
    startup tone but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot"
on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in
    automatically.

During startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.

To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

If you can get into safe mode then try and disable the startup programs cause there could be a startup program locking up the computer.

Hello I agree with benwabnick, I would also try to repair disk permissions and volume using the disk utility tool that is on the install DVD (hold the C key to boot from DVD, then choose english language, go to utilities, and choose disk utility).

My macbook won't start. how do I eject an audio CD?

You could be right. What to do is start it up and hold down the trakcpad button as soon as it starts up. Failing that try the F12 key or the eject key when starting it up, sometimes actually lifting the macbook up and pointing the DVD drive downwards i.e. using gravity to let the CD drop.

If the CD ejects and it isn't the problem causing the startup problems, what I would be tempted to do if the other troubleshooting solutions have not worked, if it still under warranty or if you have Applecare, contact apple and arrange to get it taken in for repair. Failing that take it to your local Apple Store and make an appointment at the genius bar, they usually are fairly good at diagnosing problems and solving them.

Maybe bad ram module. Open the memory cover, if accessible and see how many mem modules.
If there are 2 of them remove one, try to boot. Then try switch them, boot again.. If one combo seems to work, then the other mem module is bad. Replace it.

If there is only one module you should try to find, borrow, buy a module to test it. It does not need to be Mac branded, (triple priced) it just needs to be the same specs as existing. Depending, maybe $25 for a small stick to test it. 256MB is enough to test. these can be had for 9.95

Gray splotch on lcd screen on a macbook pro 13-inch

That is most likely a defect in the LCD itself... there was a huge issue with this on the older PowerBook series - like shown in this picture, 3 roughly dime-sized circles to the right of the Apple logo. If you need a place to mail it to, iResQ has done wonders for many of my friends - link is for mail-in, but they sell the screen itself as well if you want to try on your own (but take it from me, it's a bit troublesome and easy to mess up cables - I repair these for a living). Hope this helps!

Completely white/gray screen

your hard drive has most likely crashed.  this happened to my buddies macbook and it was $300 for a new hard drive, hopefully you still have a warranty on your mac, that way apple will cover the price.  take it in to apple and have them diagnose the problem.  my buddy was lucky bc apple covered the cost, if they refuse just be pushy and theyll eventually do it for you, im sorry
