Question about Heating & Cooling

Small goldstar window air conditioner not cooling

3 years old, not cooling nearly as well as in the past. Are they disposable? Is there anything besides the obvious filter that needs maintenance? Life expectancy. It was only a home depot special but I hate to toss something that might be sevicable.

They are servicable but usually the price it cost to service and fix the problem is more then the unit is worth so for the most part they are disposable also due to the fact that once one part starts to go they all kind of start to go from there

You need to determine if the compressor is running, if it is and you have no cooling then you either have lost charge or bad compressor, these units re not worth replacement compressor

New ac does not cool

mcdevito75 here, The cheapest way is with the warrantee card you mailed away went the unit was new. If no warrantee, then check out the A/C repair shops in your area, Sorry.

Does not cool room.

Goldstar WG5000 air conditioners use an R22 refrigerant. A charge kit containing the gauges needed to properly fill the unit, and the refrigerant tank/cartridge can be purchased to fill the air conditioner.

Goldstar GWDH 5000 does not cool after storing this winter

sounds like low freon or a blockage in one of the lines, especially since the you say only one row of coils is cool. usually window a/c's have at least a 1-year warranty and since you are pretty close to that, the manufacturer may honor it. if not you will need to have the system fitted with a bullet piercing valve on the low side lines and see if the unit is low on freon with proper gauges. if it is not showing low then there is probably a blockage and the high side should be checked as well. if this unit was an expensive one it could be worth having it repaired. a simple recharge may cost less than a replacement, but anything else probably won't.

This sounds like a filter problem or a dirty evaporator. Open the fron panel and see if the pre filter, filter, and or evaporator are dirty.

No, you don't put water into air conditioners. They make their own water and it is an inconvenient by-product that needs to be disposed of in some way. The A/C will use the outside fan blade to fling the water on the hot coil, let it drain out, or both.

Cooling motor shuts on and off...

No it is not normal. You might have a bad capicator to the motor.
Is your unit still under Warranty? If so. Call the service center.

Air conditioner

If the air flow is restricted or partially blocked (dirty cooling fins, filter etc), ice will form inside becaue the air stays in ithe cooling coil or fils for a long period of time. Lack of freon will not cause Ice formation because there is not enough cooling power.
