Question about Western Digital (WD3200JS) 320 GB Hard Drive

320 GIG Hard Drive now thinks it is an 80 GIG hard drive

I have a Western Digital Hard drive. The model number is WD3200AAJB. About a month ago, my computer shut down unexpectedly during the boot process b/c of a black out. When i turned it back on, My hard drive wouldn't boot. When i tried reinstalling a new operating system, my original NTSF partition was listed as an unknown partition. The unknown partition size is approximately 80 gigabytes (actually it's around 76 gigs, but that's how much you really get from an 80 gig hard drive anyways). I deleted the partition and reinstalled my operating system with hopes that it would correct it's size problem. I've ran many different types of hard drive recovery software but none of them found a problem with my hard drive. Is there any way to restore my hard drive to the original size of 320 gigabytes? Since this problem has occured, I have been using a different hard drive in my computer to avoid any further damage. I would like to note that when i had an operating sytem on the faulty hard drive, it did function properly. Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to read this and i hope u know how to fix my problem.

If your hard drive had 320 gb, there is empty space.
You could create new partitions on your hard drive to use the remaining empty space.

You could do that by using the windows disk management tool that could be found by typing mmc in the command prompt, or with any partition manager tool like Easeus partition master.

Enter your BIOS setup and check what the BIOS sees for hard-drive. It may not be assessing the drive size correctly so you may have to force it by manually entering the data it needs to see the drive.

The model number needs to be verified. Can you please validate it. You can go to this site and validate its drive type enter the model number and look at Specifications. Most external drives that are older than 2 years are IDE though.

External hard drive not detected

Check your jumpers on the hard drive. DON'T leave it connected very long if the jumpers are not set for master / slave (furthest away/ closest to the IDE port on the computer or it can mess up the circuit boards on one or both drives! If you are using only one hard drive, set the jumper(s) for "cable select" (often abbreviated CS). If it still doesn't detect the drive, the drive may not have an "active" partition on it. You can solve that by booting to your OS installation CD -- assuming you have one!

WD Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 not recognized at install

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

Trying to partition internal hard drive, taking along time!

Windows 98 thru Vista will partition format the hard drive during installation. Starting with XP, it can handle partitions over 1GB (1000MB).
If it is a new drive, let windows do a "quick format" during installation.

What size drive is in it now? The user manual should tell you what size drive it can use. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is to go back with the same size. The brand does not matter. Is your hard drive IDE or SATA? What is the model of your laptop?

320 wd external hard drive

It could be a faulty power adapter, or the control board inside the caddy is gone.
If you have the warranty booklet contact Western Digital , they should register your product and validate the guaranty.
If not go back to the shop the same if you pay with credit card for example, they can track your purchase.

If you do not get a replacement, well the most expensive part of your device is the Hard disk, and if you are lucky, and dont keep turning it on and off it should still be ok.
In this case buy a replacement caddy enclosure for your hard drive, they start from $10. Buy a good one for $25.
There are two kinds, pata and sata, I think yours is sata, check it out.
