Mower not running at set speed, choking

Honda Lawnmower Starts well Runs well when fully choked When the mower is set to high or low speed the RPM runs high, low, high, low. The "governer" seems to be opening and closing the butterfly valve Cleaned and gapped the plug Changed the oil. Cleaned out old gas, even in float bowl and filled with fresh gas Lubricated all moving components on outside of mower Any ideas MikeI have this problem as well with a HRX217HXA. The engine surges and slows when no load is applied. It will smooth out with blade engaged but also running on half choke and lacks power. I bought the mower for 250.00 from a friend and it seemed to run fine initially, but upon close examination I found " reconditioned" scribed into the deck so not sure what has been tampered with. Not sure whether I have a governor problem or a carburator problem. I have removed the carb and dissasembled and cleaned it. Gaskets were all in good condition. Any one have any ideas.

Hi,

Its a governor problem.

The governor work off the fly wheel. The fly wheel is on the top of the motor and has vanes on it to circulate air over the motor to keep it cool. The governor sets under the top cover on the motor and looks like a weather vane but with a spring and linkage. When the motor blows air against it to moves to control the motor carburetor to keep it from over revving.

The spring might be getting weak, or the speed is a little to high. Reducing the engine speed when the blades not engaged, it should stop doing this. This problem is common, and is nothing major. It stops when the blades are on because it brings down the speed of the engine.
Thanks

Hi Petey

The carburetor should be fully disassemble, soaked in a good quality carb cleaner, not the spray type, rinsed, blown out with air and inspected to ensure all passages are clear. It should be reassembled using a rebuild kit. The problem is the engine is trying die and the governor is trying to keep it alive. This causes the surge in rpms. Most likely plugged idle circuit.

Please do accept this solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Hi I have an mtd yardman ym 6021 sms Self starter, self propelled lawnmower. It starts reluctantly and then runs ok except it runs on full throttle all the time and you have to walk really fast behind it...

your primer is the choke the primer bulb pushes air in ti the bowl then it forces gas to inter the engine to make it start try spraying above the carburetor some wd 40 sounds like your throttle is stuck not letting your governor work ,happens alot

Honda mower starts with choke but dies when turning the throttle down below the choke setting

This most likely just needs a tune up. Worst case would be a carb rebuild or just a simple adjustment to the low and high end of the carb. there are two screws on the side for adjusting this.

Lt1050 black smoke after 15 minutes

The black smoke and black spark plugs indicate that the engine is running very rich (ie too much fuel). This could be caused by the choke not opening fully after the engine starts and the fuel mixture is too rich OR the fuel mixture setting is opened too far.
Check the choke lever, make sure the choke is fully open when the choke is in the running position.
When the engine is running with the throttle is in the 3/4 rev position then adjust the fuel mixture to get the highest RPM.

Engine starts but won't continue to run. Choke doesn't stay closed after starting. will stay running only if I hold choke closed manually.

let it warm up with choke closed manually after it starts to stall with choke closed open it and dont let it stall u can learn to play with the choke a little to get it to run right GOOD LUCK!

I have a jcb 5.5hp lawnmower, its starts with the choke closed, but as i open it, a begins to stop, it never use to do this, it always ran, when i opened the choke up, fuel is good

the choke should not be engaged when you are running your mower, it is only for starting cold engines and will choke you mower out if you open it up during operation. Only the throttle should be used to increase rpms

Mower not running at set speed, choking

you should have an air/fuel mixture screw on the carb somewhere. Start the engine and turn it one way then the other a small amount at a time. One way it will get worse and one way it will get better. Keep turning till it smooths out

Sputters & quits at proper RPM for engaging trans or mowing deck

If the choke has an adjustment point, then adjust the choke to a good overall working powerband. If it still doesn't act correctly, look for vacuum leaks. If it is an option, you may want to install a manually operated choke lever.
