Key stuck in the ignition and wont let me out of gear

It has to have power to remove the key. Jump it with another battery or charger. If you have power from the battery and no power to the inside. Check main fuses under the hood. If those are good, put power to the cigarette light, This will get the key out. Most likely have to replace the under hood fuse panel.

Hi Suzanne make sure youy gear lever is in park. Operate it a few times it may have a dodgy switch which will prevent key from being removed. Regards Jim...

THe key has a code in it that is read by the engine immobiliser. BY removing the key and reinserting you are giving the immobiliser a chance to read the code again. Give it a try. THe battery in your key may be getting low and needs replacing.

There is a spring which may be weakened or broken that retracts the gear. Only a service will fix.

This can happen if the battery is low / dead. To solve, connect a set of jumper cables between the battery in the Cobalt and a running car's battery. Shut off the running car. In the Cobalt, make sure all accessories (lights, radio, fan, etc.) are off. Step on the brake, then move the gear shifter fully into the PARK position. Next, either attempt to start the engine, or turn the key to the OFF position and remove it from the ignition.

Your shifter cable sounds like it separated from the transmission or shifter or just broke. you are probably stuck in a moving gear so the neutral safety switch is disabling the ignition.

Some chrysler vehicle have a button in front of the ignition on the steering column that has to be pushed to remove the key other wise replced the ignition cylinder itself

WHERE YOUR SHIFTER IS YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT APART ..MAYBE THE RUBBER BOOT IS IT THE WAY,OR THE SHIFT LOCK SELINOID WHENT BAD

I giggled the transmission shifter in park... heard a relay click then was able to remove key.
