When I put a blank disc into this recorder it starts the initialise process, as described in the manual, but never stops initialising. The T.V. screen shows the progress of the 2 minute process but at the end of that the DVD recorder itself still shows "initialise" on it's screen. Due to this I am also unable to open the drawer & get the DVD out.
Please help, this is driving me crazy.
It sounds like the dvd drive either is stuck or the drive is bad ....if its stuck you'll need to open it up ,unplug first ,then look for the lens cable and push it towards the beginning of the dvd (inside) and then start it up without closing it up ..... if it reads you're fortunate ,if the drive is bad it will not read still ..... in this case unplug again and take out the small screws that is holding the dvd in the drive and take out your dvd .....there are normally one screw on either side of it ....hope this helps ....

Re: LG DR4812W DVD RECORDER DISC INITIALISE
Hi!we have read your problem.please dont worry, every problem hasa solution.all you have to do is buy a dvd lens cleaner and clean the4 dvd lens since dust particles on lens will delay the processes.but make sure you are not using detergents or plain water to clean it and never touch the lens with bare hands hope your problem is tackled.have a nice day.

For VHS to DVD, put the tape to dub in the VHS slot and a blank DVD in the DVD tray. Make sure the DVD is compatible with the DVD recorder (see the recommended disc list) and is unfinalized if you are using a R/W disc. Close the tray. Set the unit to VCR mode with the DVD/VCR button. Advance the tape to the place that you want the recording to start. Then press the Dubbing button (either on the remote or the unit itself). Select the recording mode (SP, LP etc), highlight Dubbing then press Enter or Dubbing. Press Stop to interrupt the recording.
For DVD to VHS, put a blank tape in the VCR (make sure the protection tab has not been broken off) and the DVD to duplicate in the DVD tray and close the tray. Put the unit in DVD mode by pressing the DVD/VCR button. Find the point at which you want to start recording the DVD. Again press Dubbing and set up the recording mode and highlight Dubbing and press Enter or Dubbing.

The Canon DC210 will only take 'minus' format DVDs (DVD-R, DVD-R DL and DVD-RW). Only the DVD-RW must be formatted (initialised) before use. During initialisation you'' be asked whether you want to initialise the disc in VIDO mode or in VR mode.
VIDEO mode: Once finalised discs recorded in VIDEO mode can be played back in most common DVD players, offering the best compatibility. However, recordings cannot be edited (deleted, rearranged etc) on the camcorder.
VR mode: You can easily edit the recordings on the camcorder. However, discs recorded in VR mode can only be played back with DVD players that are compatible with DVD-RW discs in VR mode.
My preference is Video mode - I can then play the disc on a DVD player and edit it on a PC.
Now, to initialise a DVD-RW
1. Press the 'FUNC.' key 2. Use the joystick to select 'MENU' - it's in the bottom left corner of the screen 3. Use the joystick to select 'DISC OPERATIONS' 4. Use the joystick to select 'DISC INITIALIZE' 5. Use the joystick to select either 'VIDEO' or 'VR' mode 6. Use the joystick to select 'YES' to confirm your choice 7. Use the joystick to select 'YES' to start initialising the disc
Close the menu only after the screen display returns to the 'DISC OPERATIONS' menu.

The DVD needs to initialise the disk first. Come out of the HDD dubbing menu and press DVD on the remote. The blank recordable disk should be recognised and you should see Initialise disk? on the screen. Press Start and hey presto, you can now dub from the HDD Movie dubbing menu (as per the manual instructions).
