The machine starts up and i can put the password in but as soon as the desktop appears the machine goes into hibernation
any suggestions?
My desk top just started this 5/16/09 and has progressively worsened. Managed to get into control panel and check power monitors for never hibernating, but system won't even boot past icons now. Nothing done recently to system but do have auto updates from Microsoft.

have you tried booting into safe mode or last known good configuration? have you scaned your pc for viruses? (you can scan in safe mode)
Turn on your computer and keep pressing the F8 key. This will bring you into a boot menu, choose Safe Mode. After you get into Safe Mode choose a date before 5-16-09 and then let it roll your computer back to that point and then reboot the computer.
When it reboots then let it go into windows normally and hopefully the problem is resolved.
