Question about SmartDisk FireLite 80 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hi, I am using Mac's time machine to back up to my smartdisk firelite model #FWFL80-N. Its 80G, as is my Mac's hard drive. usually Time Machine erases older back ups to make room for new ones, but I'm getting a message saying that there isn't enough space on my drive. It needs 70 or so and there is only 6.4 left on my firelite. So I dragged the older back ups to the trash leaving nothing on my firelite. I ejected the drive and then put it back in again, tried again and same thing happened. Its still saying there is only 6.4G of space left, even though I tossed everything out. How can I reset the firelite? Thank you! Stacey

First of all, did you Empty the trash?
If so, then Try a full erase with Disk Utility. It's in your Applications in the Utilities folder... ..

How to transfer 57 gigs from a mac to firelite xp.

The hard drive maybe formatted in Windows NTFS format and the MAC cannot see this formatted hard drive.
If you only wanr to use this hard drive on a MAN then you need to format this hard drive with your MAC.
If you want to exchange files between your MAC and a PC then you need to format the hard drive on a PC in FAT32. The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk.

Will a Smartdisk Firelite 120 GB external Hard drive work on both PC and Mac?

Yes. To be used on both it will be best to format it on the PC as the PC and the Mac will be able to read it. But if it is formatted on a mac, the PC will not be able to read it.

How do I reformat my smartdisk firelite external hard drive for my new mac?

Go to the applications folder and then utilities open Disk Utility in the left box select you firelite and then clcik on the erase tab to your right. You can then select how you are going to format the hard drive standard for using with Mac only machines is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or if you want to use with both PC and Macs is MS-DOS (FAT). Then name your drive and click on erase. Hope this helps.

PowerBook G4 does not seem to recognize. (Worked well on previous Apple lap top)

If your Firelite SmartDisk was formatted for a PC, and you are using the Mac side of the G4 it won't. They use a different format scheme. Need to load Parallel, bootcamp, or another virtual PC program, and then Windows. Using that it will recognize it.

If you know another Mac user that is using both sides (Mac and Virtual PC) is a quick way to retrieve data to move it. Be careful reformatting the FireLite. There are some more complex ways. Hope that this helps.

PS: I use a 160GB FireLite on my G4, MacBook Pro as well as my Tower and notebook PCs.
