There are several ways to identify the interface, the easiest is to refer to the manual for the chip or motherboard you have installed.

Assuming this isn't possible, there are many freeware or shareware apps that do an excellent job - a
couple of reputable apps are "Belarc Advisor" - http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and "Everest" - http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?ps=UE&lang=en&page=48

There are many others; I have no affiliation with any developers and my advice is based purely on personal experience.

Windows xp identifies Belkin f5d5010 Network card as a generic ethernet controller and is unable to find a driver to install properly this adapter

If you find that you can not connect to a wireless base station (such as Apple's Airport) because of issues with the configuration software provided by your wireless adapter's manufacturer. You may wish to uninstall that software (but keep the drivers) and use XP's native support for wireless networking.
In order to do this you may need to turn on XP's wireless zero configuration.
Start -> Run
zwc000.gif
Type in services.msc
zwc001.gif Click the OK button, which will bring up the following dialogue.
zwc002.gif You may want to maximise the screen. Scroll down to Wireless Zero Configuration and select it.
zwc003.gif You now have the option to Start the service.
You also need to change the Startup Type from Manual to Automatic
Action -> Properties
zwc004.gif Click OK.
You can now use XP to manage your wireless connection.

Dear sir,

Welcome to once again Fixya support

According your problem it seems to be your try to install faulty Network card. So better is check with new good card.another possibility is some time pci slots fail to recognise a hardware, so try it with another pci slots of mother board.According to you onboard network card is dead, means motherboard fails to work when connect to a network,after successfull installation of network card also the possibility of motheboard not allow you to work with new network card ,same situation may arise,i am also managed same problems in several customer place while working as an computer hardware engineer.So try with new network card it may solve your problem

good luck

Network controller driver

us.acer.com go to service, driver download, select your model, under that above the driver list, change OS from Vista to XP Pro x32, and download the LAN driver. That is your ethernet controller drivers. Since ethernet is your network controller, I'm assuming you need your wireless NIC controller aswell, it will be listed under Wireless LAN. If you don't know/remember the make, download all of them and try each one til one works.

Problem on startup with laptop combining internal ethernet and WLAN as if there is only one network connection I am trying to fix my mother's Acer Aspire 3680. It has 1GB of RAM, running XP Home SP3. It...

Sounds like the problem may be related to the power management of the internal ethernet card.

You need to check these settings in the Acer ePower Management software (usually installed with the laptop).
E.g. If you the laptop is not charging then you will not be able to see or change any settings on the internal ethernet card.

If you do not have the Acer ePower Manager installed then you can download it here;

Thanks

Ethernet driver

dear brian,

to get you an overview on which components you have, although not installed or recognized by win xp pro, download pcwizard2008, install and run the hardware detection program, it'll give you a lots of details about your computer, you can even save the data to a pdf-file.

networking components on your laptop may be:
- the 1394 adaptor
- the( to be found) ethernet card
- and if it is onboard or u plug it in via USB 2.0 port: the WLAN-adaptor

look for the (onboard?) realtek ethernet
card(rj-45 plug, similiar to dsl-cable)
using pcwizard, find out about the model and download suitable driver rom the net for winXP.
install and then try setting up a network/internet connection

(be wise enough to use the right cable:
for hooking up your lap to an internet dsl-router use dsl cable, to establish PC to laptop connecton you will need DSL cable plus crossover adaptor !)
i recommend to use cable connections, they're
older, more reliable and for safety reasons, better than wirelessLAN!

if you have used the 1394-network adaptor before, you are better than me, I dunno anything about it.

WLAN is an option when using laptop not at home- but don't clearly understand if the toshiba model u use already has WLAN-onboard device or u do use an external, USB 2.0 device to connect to the net...?
please give more detail about that- and do tell which toshiba laptop u use as this is helpful for me to find u a proper driver, if still needed.

C U here on fixya?!

Network Card

Yes the network card is the same ethernet card. If your intel pro/100 is onboard try to re install the driver from the motherboard drvier. Check also in the manager device it the network device have a complex to the other device. Follow this, Click START then RUN type DEVMMGMT.MSC then enter check if the network adapter have a yellow question mark. If you found the network adapter right click and uninstall it.and click the ACTION and click SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES. After the installation finished try to connect to the internet. If still the same even you input the correct ip in the network configuration. Buy a new LAN card it's not expensive, because usually the onboard lan is easy to damage or not working properly you can installed and configured it but you cannot connect to the internet.
