There's already a green striped wire coming from the hornace connected there. Do I connect along with that wire?

  • money_saavy May 23, 2009

This is a 4 wire connection in the rear of the dryer, red , white, black and green.

  • money_saavy May 23, 2009

    Thanks, That did it!

Is it a 3 wire cord or 4? Are you talking about where the wire connects to the dryer in the back or is it a house wire to an outlet?

Hi, if you are talking about the green ground wire on a four prong cord, the green wire goes on the ground screw located on the cabinet next to the power block cover. I hope this help you.
If I can assist you further, please let me know and please rate my response so that others as well as myself can se how I am doing.

Yes. It is just an extra ground wire.

Yes, the red and black wires go to the outside post and the white goes to the middle ground. The green is suppose to connect to the cabinet just outside the block cover. Is there a 5/16" screw next to the cover?

These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one to the left here is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown to the right. These are just just thumbnail pictures that you can click for a larger view. But I'll bet you already figured that out, didn't you?
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.
tn_3prong_dryer_outlet.jpgtn_4prong_dryer_outlet.jpgIf you need to re-wire the outlet, these pictures will explain the anatomy of the three-prong (left) and four-prong (right) outlets. Once again, these pictures are just thumbnails--click 'em for a larger view.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

Same dryer but I need to switch to a 4 prong cord. Please help!

WARNING! I believe you want to replace a 110V-120V plug with a 220V. Don't do it until you know for sure. Sounds dangerous! Not an expert, just some free advice from a novice.

Hooking up the four prong cord to the dryer

this is the rule of thumb, white always goes on the middle terminal ,the 2 outside terminal wires it does not matter which side they are on,if you can see the red and black wire on the terminal block then match them up,the green wire gets mounted to the cabinet, you should already have a green wire to the cabinet so remove the screw and put both wires there and your done, let me know how you do-mike

Putting new power cord on dryer i have a 3 cord set up a red wire a black wire and a white wire and dont know which wire to connect to which.

on the back of your dryer.
1.connect the white wire to the center of the junction box.

2.than take the red wire and connect it to the left side of your junction box.

3.than take the black wire and connect it to the right side of the junction box.

If you have a green wire on the cord as well. PLEASE make sure it is connected to the dryers back panel. do not leave it to hang.

I have to change the power cord of my dryer. the new power cord has 4 pronge. the 4 wires colors are red, white, black and green. on the dryer i have only 3 wire: red, blue, black. i want to know witch wire...

  • green = ground (attach directly to the case, should be a green painted screw near the opening
  • red = hot 110v connect to the red on the dryer
  • black = hot 110v connect to the black on the dryer
  • white = neutral connects to the blue (only if the blue is in the middle)
  • neutral is always in the middle with a hot wire on either side of it.
  • also make sure all the connections are tight
