If you are runninf windows XP VISTA or 7 you can right click on the sound icon in the system tray on the taskbar and select "Playback Devices" select the audio output you are using ( speakers, HDMI or optical ... the one theat has a hreen checkup icon ar the bottom right side of the symbol is the default one ) push the "Properties" button ... the properties window will appear. In the prop window go to the "Enhancements" tab ( normally the fourth one ) and uncheck the "Voice cancellation" checkbox.click Apply than OK, then again OK. If you don't have the Sound icon in the SysTray just go to control panel, hardware and sound, Sound and do the same. The other way around is from The ACER HD Audio Manager ( the audio driver interface that can be also be found in Control Pannel ->> Hardware and sound ->> Acer HD Audio Manager( "Control Pannel Home" view ) or simply Control Pannel->> Acer HD Audio Manager(classic view of control pannel). In the Acer HD Audio Manager go to the "Sound Effects" tab ( the second usually ) and there is a Karaoke option; if it has a red mark in the mouth are than click on the karaoke icon ... it is the equivalent of voice cancellation from the Enhancements tab from Sound ->> Properties. In Linux go to System ->> Administration ->> Sound configuration or something like that and you should find a close match for windows voice cancellation. When I use the headphones listening to TV, I get the background sound (eg music) clearly but the dialogue is very low and drowned out by the background music or ambient sounds

It's because the TV's audio is stereo and the dialogue is mono split between two channels. When dialogue hits your headphones the majority of the mono signal gets cancelled. Try a different set of headphones or watch true stereo channels... IE movie channels

Try to connect external speaker at your computer, if the audio problems continue, then disable audio driver and reset your computer.

Crackling Audio

Is there any other programs running in the background IE Anti-Virus programs, or anything that could be using quite alot of Memory other the stuff your watching?
It could be either down to Lack of Memory being allocated to the Audio & Video (Probably the case if the machine has built in Shared Sound & Video Card). Try opening Task Manager and setting the Application that you use to play Music/Movies to High Priority.
If it's not that try lowering the Master Volume on the Mixer Device by going into the Volume Properties in the Task Tray (By the Clock).

There is a crackling sound after I record.

The problem was the VIA chipset firewire card. I changed it with a Texas Instruments one. Works perfectly now.

Problems with audio and video on windows xp home on acer aspire 5610

I had a simliar problem and found it was caused by having too many different media player programs. They were all set to be the default player for everything. You might want to make sure only one of your media players is really set to be the default.
