Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

Frost Free refrig/freezer doesnt get cold enough

We returned four days ago after several months absence to find that our eleven year-old Hotpoint CTX14CYZBRAD was not freezing. We had put too much in freeaer and blocked airflow. Cleared that. Checked compressor and it was hot and there was a white chalk-like residue that had run down from the top of the compressor--maybe an ounce or two. Fan was running. Now, with control set on 4, the refrigerator compartment reads 30 degrees. The freezer compartment fluctuates between 5 deg and 20 degrees. Makes ice cubes, but won't make hard ice cream. Do I have a problem or should I just wait a little longer.

Freezer is slowly getting warmer - water dispenser won't dispense (occasionally) turbo cool won't work

Open freezer door and look for any frost on the back wall inside the freezer. That would indicate a defrost problem.
Disconnect power to refrig. Unload freezer, Remove shelves and back panel inside freezer. Melt frost with a hair blower. Replace defrost heater located at the bottom of the heating coils. (Note: It may look different than the original, but insturctions enclosed with replacement cover that) Might as well replace the evaporator thermister at the same time, as your problem is about 98% of the time one or the other of those parts. The thermister is a white pencil shapped item, about an inch long, located cliped to the top of the cooling coils you just defrosted.
If you don't have the parts on hand, defrosting only will get your refrig working again for several days, while you obtain the parts.
Note: non-water dispensing is the result of the cold air from the freezer not being able to continue over the frost blocked coils, so it migrates back though the return air vent in the bottom of the refrig, resulting in a frozen water line, and often freezing in the bottom bin of the refrig.

Nine y/o GE side by side not getting cold enough

More likely a defrost heater. Look inside the freezer at the back wall. Any frost there? If so, turn off refrig., unload freezer, take back panel off inside freezer, and use a hair dryer to melt off the frost. Replace the defrost heater located at the bottom of the frosted coils. (New heater may appear different than original, but instructions are included) If you don't have the defrost heater on hand, just manually defrosting the coils and re-starting the refrig will get is cooling again for at least a week before problem will re-occur. (this give you enough time to get the replacement part)
