Remove hood, makes it easier to work on. in the very front of engine you will see a silver cover plate about 4x5 and 4 screws, 1 on each corner, remove it - now you will see 2 push rods and a tappet. remove push rods and make sure they are not bent. they push in and out of the tappet. the nut holding the tappet in place had backed off holding the tappet because they didn't use lock tight on the nut- push rods were slapping everywhere and consequently the engine sounded like someone was in the engine with a hammer. all you need is a screw driver and a box end wrench. you're done. trust me, your wife can do it - piece of cake. be sure to replace gasket, I used permatex, on the back of cover plate. runs like a new one. a 20 minute job at most. YES, YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF!!!!!!

I would also suggest checking for cracks in the in line fuel filter. We have the same riding mower and it happened to us. A very small insignificant crack made a huge difference.

If it quit as if out of gas, it would have coughed, emitted black smoke, and smelled bad. If this is what happened and there is gas in the tank, think dirt in the fuel system which would need to be cleaned and blown out with compressed air.  But if it just quit clean with none of the above symptoms, think failure of the electronic ignition system.

And one other thing. If the fuel system is clogged, you would be able to start for a second or two by spraying starter fluid into the carburetor. Alternatively, you could pour about a shot glass full of gasoline into the carb. If it starts and then dies, you know to clean the fuel system.

My john deere push mower starts fine mows for 10 min quits wont start so I took the the gas cap off looked at it put it back on push the prime bulb 1 time it started ran for 10 min quit did the gas cap...

I'm not sure of the model number of your mower or engine to know the fuel and carburetor set up. I do have one easy thing to try though as it sounds as if a vacume is building up in the tank. Try putting a half of tank of gas in it, leave the gas cap off, and see if it continues as it was or if it runs ok. If this stops the issue your cap vent is pluged up. I hope this helps

Engin runs fine for about twenty minutes then quits. oil level is full

try and run it with a loose gas cap the vent could be clogged then check for spark when the engine dies or even better get a inline spark tester then you can see it when its dieing

After running husquavarna riding mower 23hp mower starts backfiring and ends up quitting. mower will start back up but die out again as descibed.

I had the same issue and after trying everything I tokk the gas cap off and noticed there was negative pressure in the fuel tank when I broke the seal... I'm pretty sure the gas cap was just too tight, I threaded it back on but did not torque it down and the mower is running fine.

Riding mower won't start

take the spark plug out and see if the engine will turn over then, gas will probably come out of the cylinder cause you flooded it when you turned it over after you get the gas out of the cylinder, put the cleaned spark plug back in and it should start

I have a 21.5 HP 42in. deck mower that I just bought (used), having a little trouble with. Mower starts fine, and runs great... until it heats up, then it starts spitting and sputtering, blows out black...

The black smoke is too much fuel, it is flooding out. Carb issue, I would pull the float bowl and clean carb, the needle in carb is stuck open pumping too much gas in.

2146 runs fine for 10-15 mins then suddenly quits, gas supply fine, after sitting 2-3 hrs starts and repeats, ie 10-15 mins quits, suspect voltage regulator

coil may be breaking down or earthing out as vibration over time can wear out the insulation on the wire

Hard start

remove the carb and take the fuel bowl off ; soak it in gas for a few days; clean it good with carb cleaner spray in every hole using the straw; reassemble; clean fuel tank; add fresh gas. If this dont do it , you may have to adjust the carb ,turning the screws 1/4 of a turn at the time til you get it running and then fine tune it
