Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

My Visioneer 8650 flatbed scanner with auto document feed gives a message when I try to scan a document, telling me to move the switch on the bottom from the "locked" to "unlocked" position. The lock is designed to keep the moving parts in the scanner (not the ADF) from moving during transit. However, once I set the scanner up years ago it has always been unlocked. After this problem appeared a week ago, I have tried to fix by moving the switch from unlocked to locked, and back. I have done this many times, yet the scanner will not recognize that it is in the "unlocked" position. As a result, I cannot scan anything, whether in "reflective" mode or using the auto document feeder. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Actually a very common problem. Try the following:
1. Power down then re-power up the scanner.
2. Try slightly moving scanner. Sometimes a small change works to fix.
3. Change one of your scan setting to flatbed scan (not adf). Do a test scan under this setting. This will usually kick start scanner unit to unlock.
4. Last resort, by does also work...give it a medium slap on the side, sometimes unjams the scanner light.
5. Super last resort, power down over night, it almost always works the next day. (could be that lock up is heat related to scan lamp, dont know but just a guess).
Excellent scanner, so worth the effort to try these fixes.

How do you unlock a visoneer scanner 5800 I got back from a trip and tried to scan something and the bar is locked now and won't move more than an inch. The error message says to unlock it but I can't find...

Ensure you are using the power supply that was provided with the scanner.

The power through the strip may be fluctuating and causing the problem.

Download and install the driver provided on the 5800 USB support website.

Power won't turn on at all.

would suggest to start testing at the power adapter if the power adapter is not working properly you will need to replace it with a matching power output adapter or exact same model if you can find.

if the power adapter is not the problem, its probably not worth the repair, up to you, I haven't looked into your scanner to see if its valuable or not.

Well a new scanner / all in one printer with a scanner goes around 50usd.

Unlock

Most scanners shipped have a lock on them to prevent the top from opening up and damaging the glass. This is a screw type mabey other but a penny fits in mine. This may not be the case for you but look in your manual to find the unlock device.
This will also in some scanners prevent the stepper motor from moving in transit . The stepper motor is the device thats makes the bar slide up and down to scan the page.
Hope this helped some.

Hardware Internal Fault

This looks like a hardware fault. I hope (by now) that you have got an RMA and had it replaced.

Get another scanner. Check whether the lock has not been enabled at the bottom of the scanner. This has happened with me as well and a known Visioneer problem.
