Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I just disconnected my WD 500GB drive from my mac and connected it to my PC and it shows that is being recognized by windows but I cannot SEE the actual drive. I also have an older WD 250GB drive connected to my PC so maybe that's the problem?

My WD My Passport external Hard Drive ! TB formatted for Mac is not reading my files

A Windows PC computer will not read files on the WD hard drive that has been formatted on a MAC.
The fix.
Copy your photos onto the MAC computer then remove the WD hard drive and connect it to your Windows PC and format the WD hard drive in FAT32 file system.
After formatting has been completed remove the WD hard disk and connect it to the MAC computer. The MAC can read and write to a Windows FAT32 formated hard disk. You can now copy the photos from the MAC to the WD hard disk. When copying is complete, remove the WD hard drive and connect the WD hard drive to your Windows PC and you can now copy the photo from the WD hard disk to your Windows PC.

Wd passport 500gb only works in mac. i need it to work in other computers

It could be that it's formatted with an HFS+ filesystem, which is not natively recognized in windows. Open up the disk management and check the filesystem on the device. If it is HFS+, you can get it to be recognized by getting all the data off, formatting it with another filesystem (FAT32 or NTFS are recommended), then putting the data back on.

Hi I've got a WD external HDD. Was running it on Windows 7 but was plugged into a Mac and now doesn't show on my PC at all. Ideas?

Did you format the hard drive while it was connected to the Mac? If so, it could have been formatted into a file system windows does not recognize (anything other than FAT, FAT16,FAT32, or NTFS)

Here are some options to try: - Purchase an alternate enclosure for your hard disk enclosure in case the circuit board in the WD case has gone bad. - Try accessing the drive via MS DOS window and use CHKDSK command to repair the drive (if you can get it to be recognized). - Try connecting the drive to an alternate PC or even a Mac to see if the drive can be recognized (perform disk repair if recognized).

New hard drive not recognized on mac pro

OK what you could do is connect up that drive to a PC and format it with NTFS, & then put it on the Apple, it should then "See" the drive. Then you can work on it via the Apple.

External drive no longer appears

Hi Neil The are many reports of these drives doing just that (mind you, it's not confined to WD)
I'm guessing you're on a Mac - did you install any of WD's software?
the WD software does nothing on a mac other than cause problems. The best thing is to try connecting to another mac to see if it shows up there.
On the positive side, most times it's not the HD but the enclosure that is at fault.

The green light on my WD 500GB external hard drive started flashing and since then my computer has not recognized it. How do I fix this?

It is possible that the connection between the two drives is interrupted. If you really go the safest way, turn off your pc and disconnect your external drive. Reboot your pc and see if you when reconnecting your drive Windows finds it.
