Question about Sony KP-51WS500 51" Rear Projection Television

Picture Brightness Flickers

I bought this TV back in August 2002……………..you guessed it the extended warranty has expired.

In the Past I’ve had the Curved RED Lines in the screen and had fixed them adjusting the controls for the re-trace (Red, Green and Blue) the controls on the front (behind the wood Panel).

The problem I’m seeing now is that the Pictures Brightness starts to flicker once the TV has been on for awhile.

It?s like the power to the Projector is fluctuating causing the brightness to flick.

Anyone have any suggestion before I call a Service Guy?

1) Over-riding a common convergence problem by turning up
the screen controls on the focus block is not the right approach.
 Brightness fluctuation can result......
2) Change out STK392-560 IC's ( convergence) and
3) Reset RGB screen controls to normal level

Let me know how you are doing.....T.

Could be one or more of three things.
1.could be the crt itself.(sony had a bad bunch of crts for this model)
2.could be the vertical ic on crt board.
3.could be the focus block
in my experience solutions 2 and 3 are more common....

Fault at its main digital board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

In most cases, the main board might have to be replaced. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.

I am having the same problem with my Sony. I bought it at Circuit City in November 2007 and the extended warranty, which I thought was for 4 years, has expired. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you resolve it?

The tv popped and I now have no picture and no song

probably blew the power supply board, very common problem. call 1-800-samsung, if warranty expired recently, and you complain about it they will probably extend the warranty for this problem.

Samsung LE40B550 - No Picture

Hello,

I had exactly the same problem with my LE40B550 which I bought in July. I phoned the place I bought it online (eBuyer) and they put me in contact with a Samsung repair centre who fixed it under warranty. It took them 2½ weeks to fix it and get it back to me. The note that came back with the TV said they had replaced the IP board. I think the part number was H40F1 9HS.
The repair centre paid less than £50 for the board (it shows on the returns paperwork).

If you only bought yours in August, and haven't had it fixed yet, I suggest you just get in contact with whoever you bought it from and get it done under warranty.

TV UNDER WARRANTY & NO RESPONSE FROM DEALER JAN.6,2009

Hello,

All too often, extended and third party warranties are not honored as they should be. Some are even totally worthless. The general plan of a lot of third-party warranties is to hold the customer off until the warranty expires, and then deny it. If this was an extended warranty through the Rex store, then consider talking to a lawyer as soon as possible. One letter from an attorney may be all it takes. Or even the threat of going to an attorney is enough some times. It is a legally binding agreement that expires, so once it is up, they will almost certainly deny your claim.

Almost all extended warranties have a time frame for repair, and more specifically replacement! If they cannot repair the TV within a certain amount of time, then they should replace it.

I hope this helps you...

It sounds as if you have a grid to anode short that is inconsistent. I would try to get the warranty company to just go ahead and replace all three tubes and be done with it. But, this is only my opinion, and past experiences with these sets. An aside; the more brightness level you ask of the tubes, the more this can be aggravated, as a general rule. Try different sources and program content and see if this is the case. Those scenes with more luminance (brightness) will stress the tubes more than low-level or dark scenes. See if that helps...accordianman

I think you are right about the backlight. You need to replace the backlight tube or, if you can, replace the TV. Good Luck.
