Question about Garmin GPSMAP 172C GPS Receiver

Unit powers itself down

This season my unit began powering itself down. It usually works for about 40 minutes then it shuts itself off. When I restart it stays on for about 5 minutes then shuts down. After this it tries to initalize then shuts down. If you have any ideas about how to fix this or where to send it (Garmin no longer does out of service warranty work for this unit) I would appreciate it. Thank you very much.
the receiver stays on for 2 - 5 minutes and then suddenly powers off.

Does it do this when on battery mode?
or when its plugged in?
i found they do tend to drain quicker the older it gets and that just because of a week internal battery.. i just leave mine plugged in to the cig lighter in my car and i dont have that problem but if you have to use battery power it will drain fast no real fix unless you get a new internal battery and its much easier to just leave it plugged in.

The unit runs Ok for a few minutes and then shuts down.

Does it do this on just battery power or with an external power source? If on battery poer, then the battery if defective.

The tv shuts off by itself. I will turn it on..and after awhile, it just turns off by itself, and then after about a minute I can turn it on again and watch tv for awhile, and then it will do it again.

It seems that your unit has some sort of PSU fault, or a problem that is shutting down the Power Supply Unit, PSU. This happens so that no further damage, and possible fire will occur. The faulty component(s) are heating up, tripping the fault control, and shutting down, it cools down again, and will restart, then the process repeats, it will eventually fail fully.
You need to take the unit to a reputable service centre/man and ask for a firm "Quote" for the work to be done. It is that sound that gives it away, this is a typical switchmode Power Supply problem.

T.V. was on several minutes later the sound and picture disappeared. Tried troubleshooting in manual but nothing worked, what should we do now.

The unit senses a fault in the power circuit. It is either in the power supply unit (PSU) peripherals or in the PSU itself.
  • One of the peripherals might be loading down the PSU causing it to shutdown.
  1. Check the power input terminals of the peripherals for any short circuit using an ohmmeter.
  2. Replace any part found to be causing the issue.
  • The power supply unit cannot run under load and shuts down. It is usually caused by bad capacitors.
  1. Check the PSU board for any bad capacitor.
  2. Replace bad capacitors with the same specifications.
  3. Make sure to replace the capacitors in correct polarity.
  4. Bad capacitors look like these:3a72a3c.jpg17dffa0.jpg

It doesn't matter what you do, that the system will power down after being on for exactly a minute? Or do you find that when you try using it a few times in a row that the shut off happens a little sooner each time? Did this suddenly start happening or was it something that began occurring gradually (meaning it would power on for an hour and then auto shutoff)?

It sounds to me like some electrical component inside is failing and that the self-protection circuitry design is kicking in. Or it could be that the power transformer is worn out and can't maintain power for more than a minute.

Keep in mind that repairs to these older electronics can end up costing as much as it would be to buy a new unit (and new units offer much more technology anyway).
