Dryers come with a wire or metal strap connecting the center "neutral" terminal to the frame of the dryer. When using a four wire power cord, take that wire or strap off the frame. (it can be discarded or better yet, in case this dryer needs to ever be converted back to a three wire cord) connect the frame end of the wire / strap to the center terminal of the power block. Now, Green (ground) wire goes to the dryer frame, White (neutral) goes to the center terminal, and the Red and Black (both "hot") wires go to either outside terminal. (one to each)

I have a four prong clothes dryer plug that needs to go in a three prong outlet - 220v. Any ideas?

It's either you convert the 3-prong outlet to 4-prong or the 4-prong cord to 3-prong. But the latter is easier and more feasible. Unplug the dryer then disconnect the 4-prong cord from the dryer. Note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray. The red and black wires are lines L1 and L2 reversibly, meaning they can switch places, while the white and green/yellow wires are the neutral line and ground, respectively.

Get yourself a 3-prong cord and note that it has red , black, and white wires but sometimes, like the 4-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect these 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 4-prong cord to the terminal block. The wire strapped to the dryer cabinet and connected to the green/yellow wire of the 4-prong cord wire is now left hanging. The last step is to connect this hanging strap wire to the same terminal on the terminal block (center) where the white wire (neutral) is connected and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3. On the other hand, converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4. if its a" flat cord" what-ever color jacketed 3 wire cord, the 2 outside wires are your 2 hot power wires they go to L1 and L2 on your dryer, the center is the N neutral wire and goes to the N terminal, usually the L1 and L2 are a gauge larger than the neutral: HINT: the center is normally neutral on both the cord and machines terminal board in the back of the dryer, there usually is a diagram on the dryer on how to install the input power at the place you hook up power

I am changing out the dryer cord on my Whirlpool electric dryer from a 3 prong to a 4. there is a green wire with a yellow strip coming from the dryer and grounded on the side of the dryer like a grounding...

Hello. Now that you are upgrading to the four prong you should unhook the green wire with yellow strip coming from the dryer and instead attach the extra green ground cord on the 4 prong to the screw on the side of the dryer. Regards, Joe.

TRYING TO HOOK A 3PRONG CORD WHAT TO MAKE i"m doing it right

These two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one to the left here is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown to the right. These are just just thumbnail pictures that you can click for a larger view. But I'll bet you already figured that out, didn't you?
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

Change the power cord from 4 prong to three

If converting from a 4-prong to a 3-prong configuration, the wires are terminated at the terminal block as follows:

RED (hot) - to RED
BLACK (hot) - to BLACK
WHITE (neutral) - to WHITE
GREEN (ground) - is terminated to neutral by using a common screw at the terminal block, or by using a ground strap from the neutral terminal to a ground on the equipment casing.

If in doubt, the following link explains the color codes:

If you have any questions, please ask me. I hope this helps you.

Prongs on dryer

Take old cord off. Remove wire or ground strap connecting dyer frame to center (nutral) terminal. White wire goes to center terminal. Green wire to frame (ground) Red and Black wires go to two remaining terminal, order really won't matter.

Bought used dryer. Plugs don't match. Can cord be switched?

Yes, these cords can easily be switched. When you remove the three prong cord from the terminal block in the rear of the unit, you will wire the four prong in the same way. Black and red go to the outside terminals, white to the middle terminal, and the green wire goes to the cabinet or ground screw on the outside (usually, there is a greenish looking bolt around the terminal block door area for this to go). The only difference in a 3 and 4 prong configuration is the extra ground (green) wire. Good luck and let me know if you need further information.
