Fax machine won't answer and pickup. I have to manually pick up the receiver and press start. This just started a few days ago.
I have a Brother IntelliFAX4100. I've had it for 4 years. A few days ago (Monday, May 18, 2009), the fax machine suddenly stopped receiving faxes. It just rings and rings and rings. I unplugged it for about 20 seconds 2 different times. I haven't changed any settings. I'm not sure what I need to do. Please help. Cell phone: (214) 226-2186.

Re: Fax machine won't answer and pickup. I have to...
You probably have it in the fax/tel or TAD mode. Press the butoon on the top right side of the keyboard marked "mode" until the light above it is on "fax" only. This mode (fax/tel) is for phones/faxes hooked to an answering machine. The "fax" mode puts in into the direct answer mode as a fax machine.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Sorry, but you have to be more specific on what are you trying to achieve and what you have done so far. Do you want the unit to automatically answer a call and receive the fax? If so, make sure that you have switched it to FAX mode (press the MODE button repeatedly until FAX is shown on the display). You can also set it to FAX/TEL mode, whereby the machine will answer the calls and signal (ring) if it is a voice call not a fax. The default setting is for the machine to answer after 4 rings, refer to the manual if you want to change this value (you can download the manual here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/files/dlf/doc002079/FAX4100e_UsaEngUsr_B.pdf
If you want to manually receive a fax after you've picked the phone up yourself, then when you hear the other side fax beeping, simply press the START button.
Manual mode turns off all automatic answering functions unless you are using the Distinctive Ring feature or you are using an external answering machine on the same line as the Brother machine.
*Distinctive Ring is a function of your Brother machine that allows a person with one line to receive fax and voice calls through two different phone numbers on that one line. Brother uses the term "Distinctive Ring," but telephone companies market the service under a variety of names, such as Custom Ringing, Personalized Ring, Smart Ring, Ring Master, Ident-a-Ring, Ident-a-Call, Data Ident-A-Call, Teen Ring, SimpleBiz Fax & Alternate Number Ringing and BT Call Sign.
Setting the Receive Mode
Press the up or down arrow key to select Initial Setup.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Receive Mode.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Manual.
Receiving Faxes in Manual Mode
Lift the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as your Brother machine.
When you hear the sending machine's fax tones (short beeps that occur at regular intervals), do one of the following:
If the telephone you answered is near your Brother machine or connected to its EXT jack(socket), press Black(Mono) Start or Color(Colour) Start.
If the telephone you answered is not connected to or near your Brother machine, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand) on its dial pad.
Your Brother machine will produce receiving tones.
Replace the telephone handset. Your Brother machine will begin to receive the fax.
< Easy Receive (Fax Detect) >
The Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine. Your Brother machine will automatically generate fax receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.
Your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature is turned ON by default. To adjust your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) setting, please follow these steps:
Press the up or down arrow key to select Fax.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Setup Receive.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Easy Receive or Fax Detect.
Press the up or down arrow key to select On, Semi or Off.
*In some brother machines, Semi may not be in the options.
If you choose Semi, your Brother machine will only answer an incoming fax if you answer using its handset or by pressing the Hook, Hook/Hold, Hold, Speaker Phone or Tel/R key on its control panel.
Here are a couple of points to keep in mind:
If Easy Receive (Fax Detect) is ON, but your Brother machine doesn't automatically answer the incoming fax when you lift the extension telephone's handset, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand).
If you send faxes from a computer that is on the same telephone line as the Brother machine and the Brother machine intercepts the calls, turn Easy Receive (Fax Detect) OFF.
Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.
Use the Reception Mode button to set appropriate answering mode - press it repeatedly until a small arrow on the display will point to the desired option:
"TAD" - is the one you are using now, when the answering machine picks up the calls.
"TEL" - is the setting when no automatic pickup occurs, you always have to pick up the call and either talk (if there's a person on the other side), or press START to receive a fax (when you hear the fax beeps on the other side).
"FAX" - is the setting when after four rings the fax will pick the call up automatically (no answering machine). If you pick up the call manually after 1-2-3 rings (before the automatic pickup) you can either talk or START fax reception.
It's good to check from time to time if the reception mode is as you want it, it's easy to change it by mistake.
Good luck and come back with a testimonial if helped :)
Problem lies in your Receive Mode setting. If you don't have a dedicated phone line for the fax machine, you need to set it up for either Manual where you answer every call or Fax/Tel whereby the Fax machine determines if the incoming call is a fax or phone call. Instructions per Intellifax 4100 Manual.
Select a Receive Mode
Choose the mode that best suits your needs by pressing the Mode button
repeatedly until the FAX and FAX/TEL lights show the setting you want to use.
You must answer every call yourself.
The Brother machine must be started manually
to receive faxes.
For use with a dedicated fax line.
Every call is answered as a fax.
For receiving fax and voice calls on one line.
The FAX answers every call and receives a fax or
double rings for you to pick up a voice call.
For use with an answering device.
The TAD answers every call and stores voice messages.
Fax messages are printed.
If all else fails try the manual mode:(Press Receive Mode to select
FAX ONLY, FAX/TEL,TAD:ANSWER MACH. orMANUAL.)
1 Pick up the handset while the phone is ringing.
2 Press Fax Start if you hear fax tones (beeps).
3 When the LCD shows RECEIVING, replace the handset.
(best used when you are expecting a fax and know that the incoming call is a fax)
If you are like most people you probably also have a phone with an answering machine or voicemail setup on your home phone. If this is the case you may want to set the reception made to TAD:ANSWER MACH.
First only plug the line in the LINE socket otherwise it wont receive.
Manual receive will probably be the best as conflict may occur with the answering machine and the fax. You will either not receive faxes or messages. Its a bit of a pain as you will have to be home to receive faxes. eg pick up the handset and press start.
Its the easiest. Unless you want to fiddle with both machines settings to use the fax/telephone mode.
Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :
Select Receive Mode MANUAL —You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press Fax Start to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with Distinctive Ringing. (See Distinctive Ring , page 8-1.) FAX ONLY —The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call. FAX/TEL —The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring), different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine, set Ring Delay to 4. (See For FAX/TEL Mode Only , page 5-5.) TAD:ANSWER MACH. —This is the only setting in which you can use an external answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for fax tones. If it detects fax tones, it prints the fax. The TAD setting works only with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time do not work in this setting.
