I have the same problem with my DVDR3440H.

I have disassambled the recorder, and I have understand that the problem is in the plastic cover of the reader box that sometimes (or always) block the drive.

at the last, I have open a hole in the case, in the top near the left side, and when the problem appear, I pull gently the plastic, and the drive open.

My draw will not open

Hi, If you hire sound of motor (when you push the switch) who open the door then is rubber band on wheel inside DVD, or cd is stuck inside. In that case you can hook door with something and pool up easy! If no light on displey, or don`t hear motor (when you push the switch) then is electronic circuit in DVD, then you must go in service.
Good luck.

Philips DVDR3440H Our DVD recorder is playing up, insofar as the disc tray won't open. Each time I press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the front of the machine, the LED says OPEN and then BLOCKED. This then...

Disc loading mechanism fault. Might be of a broken gear wheel or a drive belt. In rare cases, the mechanism replacement should be done. If you wish to get some details; visit the site linked here. Pull up older posts. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/

Not reading pre-recorded dvd's and ocassionally not re-wrtten dvds

Over recent months my recorder has stopped reading pre-recorded disc's and more requently re-writer disc's. I had thought that the region had some how been altered, but not too sure now. Is there a way of checking? Or is there a problem with the laser block. I have stripped the machine down and thoroughly cleaned (but no dust found) and no loose parts. I have reset to manufacture default but this hasn't helped.

DVD-RW discs I have recorded sometimes say 'disc error' sometimes 'no disc' sometimes start ok but cycles round and round for 5 - 10 mins before stopping, sometimes goes straight into play at last position, won't stop back in menu just goes straight to stndby. Factory reset dosn't help. Wont play pre-recorded discs without going into menu and messing around. It seems to damage or not record RW discs properly a lot of the time. Not even sure if it's resetting to factory settings properly.

Can't record from hdd to recordable dvd

Had the same problem on my 6month old 3440H, its the degradation of the cheap Asatech Chinese DVD drive that is the source of the problem. . My 3440H HDD to DVD transfer sequentially degraded, It stopped recording DVD+ and -R's then on RW's it sometimes performed and some not.I gave up using cheap DVD's then with higher quality disks  it would frequently report task completed but then would not plaback or freeze in the way you describe. I bought the DVDR from the CO-OP Xmas 2006. Co-op no longer support electricals so when it went wrong Co-op gave me a service centre to take it to. Long story short Philips dont recognise the service centre and they declared my warrany void. Tried to re-engage with Philips but they basically were not interested in supporting their product..
Not an elegant fix but since Phillips were useless,  I opened the box nothing ....to lose ..I now run it on a bare external Sony DVD drive using extended ribbon and power cables as its a bit tricky to find space in the box to mount the drive.
Regards
Murray
