Question about Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition for PC

Blank screen when I log on - no desktop

No desktop when I turn on my computer. Able to get on line through Task Manager. AVG has sent me an e-mail with a format to transfer to my Desktop??? and then run to diagnose problem and send back to them. I have no idea how to action this. No option to transfer to desktop comes up when this format is highlighted and even if I did my problem is that I am unable to bring up my desktop. I have Vista Home but am not really PC literate.

Did you accidentally uncheck the desktop and start menu. On desktop screen, right click your mouse, then select properties or personalize, then goto taskbar and start menu. See if you put a check the AUTO HIDE THE TASKBAR. This item should be uncheck and other item should be with a check mark.

If this doesn't work then something in your system have a virus infection, it might be.

Ok then use again the task manager, on file menu click New Task(run) type in explorer, hit enter. After that goto desktop. This can get you to browse already.

If you want to use internet explorer you could try to key in, in its NEW TASK iexplore.

If this getting you a hard time. You can revert it back using system restore, on boot up try to hit pause that will give you how you boot or some repair options.

Doing it in task manager is like your running on command prompt already.

For more info try to contact manufacturer's support or have it service by a qualified technician.

Tip

Solve black screen after windows bootup

After logging on there is no desktop, task bar, system tray or side bar. Instead you are left with a totally black screen and a single My Computer Explorer window. Even this window might be minimized making it hard to see.
1. Restart the Computer and login with the login and password that you use.

2. If the black screen appears and there is no icon visible on screen, Press the “ALT + CTRL + DEL” keys on the keyboard together.

3. A windows will appear with option to launch Task Manager, Simply Launch Task Manager.

4. On Task Manager, go to Application Tab and Click on New Task

5. Now type "explorer.exe" in the task window and click run.

No start task bar in safe mode

It sounds like explorer.exe is being turned off. When you log in to Safe Mode hit Ctl+Alt+Del to bring the Task Manager and see if explorer.exe is running under Processes. If not, you can go to the Applications tab in Task Manager and click the New Task button and simply type in explorer.exe.
If this does not give you your Start Menu and Task Bar then you need to take your computer back to the repair service and have them fix it properly this time. Otherwise, you'll have to reinstall the operating system.

Had a virus got rid off it but now screen is white and cannot do anything with it

A white blank screen? That sounds like the virus changed your display settings. Click Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to the task manager. Press and hold the Ctrl key plus the Alt Key then hit the Del key. When the task manager opens up Click File at the upper left corner of the window then select New Task RUN. When the create New Task Window opens type: explorer.exe and hit OK. See if it starts populating your desktop icons and shows the start menu and task bar. If so, the virus changed your settings.

To change your display background click Start/Control Panel and look for Display or Appearance and Personalization. When it opens select the Desktop tab and change the desktop background. Hopefully the white will go away.

You may have to get into Safe Mode to do the above if the virus disabled the Task Manager.

Computer has viruses which might be why it has a the blue screen

Try entering safe mode and doing the virus scan:
  • Switch on your PC
  • Before the Windows Logo screen appears press F8 to get the startup options menu
  • Chose Safe Mode
  • Once your computer boots, run AVG and let it remove all the viruses. Reboot and it should go into Windows as normal. You might have to rerun the scan a few times to get rid of everything but it should do the job.

Blank screen, can only start programms by task manager

Try to boot Vista into Safe Mode. Tap the F8 Key right after you turn on the computer until you get the Advanced Boot Up Menu
and use the keyboard arrow keys to select Safe Mode. The next screen may ask you to select your operating systm. Select Vista, not the Recovery Console.

Does your task bar and icons appear in safe mode? If so, it might be one of your start up programs that is failing and causing explorer.exe to fail during normal boot-up into Windows and not allowing your taskbar and icons to appear. Click Start and type in msconfig and hit enter then click the Start Up tab and look at all the programs that start up when Vista is starting up. Do Not uncheck anything in the list that you do not recognize as you may uncheck drivers or Vista starting programs that you computer needs to start up Vista properly. Google anything you don't recognize and uncheck any Start Up programs you do not need to start when Vista boots up, like Quicktime player or Adobe Reader for example. (This would also help your boot up time into Vista)

Sounds like explorer.exe crashed. Try opening up the Task Manager again, and Click File > New Task and type in explorer.exe. See if the task bar and your desktop icons appear.

If they appear for a brief moment then disappear again, the Windows explorer.exe is corrupted. Explorer.exe will try to start and then fail again. You may need to use System Restore to bring your computer back to a date and time when the computer was working properly, before the Vista update.
