Motor dies when engaging the cutting blades

Also when the clutch/brake is depressed on a 17.5 hp Craftsmen riding mower with a 42 in cutting deck

Check the safety switch under the seat. Disconnect it and clean the contacts. That was the problem with my mower.

    Good luck,

I have a craftsmen. Went out to mow and the battery was dead. Recharged it and then when i went to let off brake/ clutch it started to die. This also happened when trying to engage the blade. I check...

Just to help you with your troubleshooting:
You can get off the seat with the engine running if the blades are not engaged and the brake is on.
I also think that you can start the mower without being in the seat, but I'm not sure about that.
First, see if you can jump the seat switch.
Second, I think the discharged battery is a different issue.

Problem still exist, engine dies when brake relesases, blade engage, unplug safety switch under the seat

Switch under seat needs to be plugged in and make sure the pto lever for the blades is depressing the safety switch. If you are sitting on seat and seat switch is plugged in properly and it cuts off when brake is released then it is seat switch. It is about a $10.00 part; no big deal to replace.

When i turn the key on the mower the engine turns but does not want to start

if theres a safety mech's on them make sure blades and pto are disengaged, also sometimes you have to depress clutch or have the parking brake set, just like if you are mowing and decide to stop and put it in nuetral if the blades are lowered and pto engaged when you leave the seat the motor will cut off. if that isn't it make sure your spark plug is pushed all the way on.

Riding mower dies when releasing brake

the seat switch is the problem. the switch itself could be bad, but usually theproblem is that the connector is just not plugged in all the way [by the way, trying to bypass the switch by inserting the wire doesn't work because there is a "switch" inside the connector to prevent you from doing just what you did]

I have 16 hp Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine.

It may think you are in reverse and is killing the motor to keep you from backing up with the blade running. Look for switch that is telling it when you are in reverse, maybe it is stuck with grass or other debris. another possibility is that the blades are jammed and they are stalliing the motor. Mines stalls easily when cold.

Mower starts, but when I let off clutch, it dies.

Grass and debris clogg the switch mechinisms, safety interlocks are sometimes a pain to diagnose but I would first look at the seat interlock, the petal switch and ffinally then the mowing deck.
