What probably occured is that the drum support roller (one Or both of two) that hold up the back of the drum have worn out and are wobbling on the shafts. This lets the drum drop down and hit metal, possibly the top of the motor, or the shafts the insulation you speak of is actually called a heat sheild and keeps heat in the drum and seals it at the back. You will have to take the screws out at the lint filter, then pry the top up at the front. Then there are two 5/16 head screws holding the front panel on. Take these loose and the pull on the front. It will come to you some then you can disconnect the door switch wiring. Then lift up on the whole panel that will lift it off the little catches at the floor level. Then you look under the drum and you will see the belt and idler pulley arrangement. Flip the belt off and then use it as a strap to lift the drum out. You will see the rollers and will have to replace the and also the heat sheild. Check the belt for fraying, lube the idler pulley with oil, not WD40, and reassemble. Often the parts store will have a diagram of how the belt goes on the pulley as it can be a little tricky. These are good dryers built by Whirlpool, don't let it go so long when you hear clunking or bad noises next time,Good luck, AJ

I have a stacked Frigidaire FEZ831CA washer/dryer combo and when running the dryer it makes a very high pitched (AND LOUD) screeching sound. Any ideas as to what might be the problem? Thanks, Sean

screeching sound
Sean, Bad felt gasket body to drum, if belt drive on dryer, it could be worn and slipping, making a screech, or if not the belt, the drum may have a worn bearing on its hub allowing it to run crooked and rub where it should not.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Dryer makes a screeching sound when run

It's probably caused by a coin, nail or screw between the dryer drum and the dryer housing. However strange it may sound, just put your head inside the dryer drum and look around the front juncture between the drum and dryer housing. You may find the offending object fairly easily.

My maytag neptune dryer mdg5500aww is making a screeching sound. It is drying the clothes but it is getting louder by the day. What part needs to be replaced?

There are 2 wheels in the rear that the drum rotates on - one could be binding. The tensioner has a wheel, check it for rotation. Belt slipping? Check motor for operation - check that plastic blower isn't rubbing in its box. Dryers are easy to disassemble - check YouTube for procedure.

I have a frigidaire stackable washer/dryer model number FEx831cs0. The washer is working just find but the dryer for a few weeks has been making the worst screeching sounding in the world. I am not sure if...

A loose belt often makes a squeak that pulsates with the clothes hitting the paddles in the drum. It's probably the upper drum glide or rear bearing. If it's a constant screech coming from the front, it's probably the glide. If the noise seems to be in the back, suspect the bearing. You might check for a sock or something small that is stuck somewhere between the drum and the dryer.

Neither are very difficult to repair.

I have a Neptune electric dryer model MDE4000ayw. The clothes keep getting stuck around the barrel as the dryer is operating. What is the problem? It also makes a very loud noise as it operates.

You need to disconnect the dryer from power source, open the unit, it sound like the drum has holes on it that stucked your clothes when turning. this problem common to all maytag dryers. The front support glide had chop up . You might likely change the drum or tumbler.

Comment if the solution solve your problem

Clothes get stuck between dryer and barrel

If your clothes get stuck, marked or torn in your dryer, check these:

Rollers
Rear seal
Front glides
Front seal
Rollers Your dryer may use rollers, or wheels, to support the rear of the clothes drum. When these are worn out, they may cause the clothes drum to drop down slightly, which can pinch the clothes between the top of the clothes drum and the rear of the dryer interior. When the rollers wear out, you need to replace the whole set.

Rear seal Your dryer may have a felt-like seal at the rear of the drum. If this seal is worn, torn, or missing, clothes can get caught and torn in the space between the clothes drum and the rear of the dryer interior. When the rear seal wears out, you need to replace it.

Front glides Your dryer probably uses nylon or plastic glides at the front of the clothes drum for support. When these are worn out, they may cause the clothes drum to drop down slightly, which can pinch the clothes between the top of the clothes drum and the front of the dryer interior. When the glides wear out, you need to replace them as a set.

Front seal Many dryers have a felt-like seal at the front of the drum. If this seal is worn, torn, or missing, the clothes in the dryer may get caught and torn in the space between the clothes drum and the front of the dryer interior. When the seal wears out, you need to replace it.

Maytag sde3606ayw make loud screeching noise

You Need to replace the drum Rollers. They cost around 10.00 Each online, 20.00 Each at your Dealer. Please Dont try to Put Oil on The Roller Shaft. It will come off and make its Way To Your Clothing. Martin Appliance Sells Specific Oil for the shaft for around 8.00. Thanks Sean
