Archos 704 plays video and music too fast

My player plays ALL videos and music at a high speed so voices sound like alvin and the chipmonks.  I've tried every option to change the playback speed, but any change and it goes silent, only the "normal" speed produces any sound, but that is too fast.  I tried updating to the latest firmware, but again, no improvement.
