My camera has been this way for about a month now. Whenever I turn on the computer the lense does not open and my camera says zoom error and the light that flashes when a picture is taken flashes. Whenever I press that button to take a picture the camera does the same thing. I thought that there might be sand in the lens, but that has happened before and a little tap on the side of the camera fixed that problem.

same thing, zoom error! the lens is stuck out on mine and it wont go back in. very frustrating. i tried pulling it out more but that didnt work, neither did turning it on/off or changing the batteries. the camera wasnt dropped either. it took great photos then went to sh*t.

Most people say to either slap it hard or put fresh batteries in. I've opened one up and seen that the gearbox isn't designed to be worked on. It needs a 3-point screwdriver (available through online mailorder) for some of the case screws, and you'll have to pull some ribbon cable to take the lens assembly out. The wiring harness is wrapped around the gearbox case and can't be taken apart, the most you may be able to to is try to spin gears from the outside or clean it with a can of air. Since I've trashed mine, if there's anyone brave enough to open up the gearbox, please send me pictures!!

I had the problem with the lens being stuck out. I ended up pressing gently but with a lot of force and it collapsed while making some load clicking noises, I figured that I’d busted it, but I turned it off and back on and it worked great. I know it’s not a great fix but it might work for some of you.

Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct the problem. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

We have a message coming up saying "zoom error"

If the camera was operating properly before the zoom error then the most common problem to a stuck lens is dirt getting stuck between the two lens barrels. There are a few fixes for this none are guaranteed to solve the problem and should not be attempted if the camera is under any type of warranty. They include removing the batteries for a few minutes, reinstalling the batteries with fresh once with full power, turn the camera on while holding the the zoom button. Another method is to see if you can provide extra power to the focus motor by having the LCD screen turned off. There my be a button that allows you to switch from the viewfinder to the LCD screen switch to the viewfinder and try several times to focus (just point the camera at different distant objects) and attempt to focus the camera. I hope this gives you the results you need because the other suggestions may further damage the camera and are only a (last resort) thing. One is with the camera turned on tap the body on a counter or table edge while trying to zoom the lens obviously in the opposite direction to where it's stuck. The last is to gently push the lens in with the palm of you hand while zooming in. All these are just suggestions and carry no guarantee of working and may further damage the camera. The biggest cause of this problem is dust from a camera bag or some other environmental condition like sand from a beach.

Fujifilm finepix j38 series reads zoom error and wont take a pic.

If you have some skills, you can open the camera and cline your zoom lens with toothbrush and compressed air. Try to separate zoom lens from the electric motor. usually is 2 or 3 screws. You will see a lot of sand inside the camera and lens. And next time when you will go to the beach, you will take more care about your camera.
Solution 2, and more easy is to buy another zoom lens from ebay.Or another camera same model with broken LCD or other technical problem than zoom lens.

Broken zoom

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try:

Fuji finepix A600 camera - Zoom error

I had the same problem turn up after a few weeks. When I used the zoom button, the lens pushed out again and the camera worked normally for that time. I had to go through that procedure every time I turned the camera on.
I then sent it back on warranty and they replaced the lens assembly as well as the mode dial knob etc.
This camera has a 3 year warranty.
good luck...

Dirt /dust in the lens and lens gear box ( this drives zooming only ) preventing optimum functioning. Lens cannot properly come on line ( shutter and diaphragh mechanism then do not come on line ) and the camera switches off. Solution : is ether replace lens unit or dismantle lens to clean out ( from gear box and the helicoil of the lens ).

Zoom error message

Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
