Dell Inspiron 1300

Was using this laptop as normal last night and shut down the thing as usual when I'd finished. Went to turn it on again today....and nothing!
No power / no lights etc. Not even when you connect it up to the mains?
Is this my battery thats gone?

Well you cna verify which could be the probelm by following this steps:

1. Take out your battery and connect your PC to the mains directly. If it comes on then the Battery might be the problem.

2. Take off the PC Battery and if possible get another battery with the same model. Place it in your PC and start it up. If it comes up then its obvious your battery is bad and needs to be replaced.

If neither of these test options dont work out then you might need to change your PC power pack

Not sure if this will help you or not. I had this same exact problem off and on with an Inspiron that my company issued me. I used to have to take the battery out, then plug in the power cord to the laptop, try turning it on, then putting the battery back in. Not sure at all why it gets stuck like that but that always seemed to work for me. It could very well be that your battery isn't seated properly as well. :) Good luck.

When I plug the charger into my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop, it gives me an error message saying it does not recognize the charger. The charger is only two months old and was working fine just last night. ...

First thing to try would be the work mate's charger again to see if it still charges. If it does? That rules out any issue with the battery.
Next, I would clear the cmos.
To do this? slide the battery out using the 2 slide pins. Unscrew the memory door, then unplug the cmos battery held within. Replace after a couple of minutes.

Now try your charger again.

My dell inspiron 1545 won't shut down went i click on the shut down icon it won't turn off .

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. That will hard-shut the PC. Once that is done, fire it back up, and try again. Somethimes, windows will act goofy shutting down. Especially Vista when it is left on too long without shutting it down.

Severe corruption. Since you can no longer boot in any way in it it's going to be extremely hard to fix it. Better just reinstall Windows from scratch. Use the recovery cd that should have come with the laptop. If you don't have it then just use a disk borrowed from a friend and the key on the label.

Get in touch with Dell again as the replaced part will be under warranty. You can never tell whether a new or second hand motherboard has been fitted, as manufacturers are able to do either when they repair it, so it just may well of failed again.
