Question about Canon PowerShot A570 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Canon A570IS lens frozen half way-no power

Camera: Canon A570IS
Problem: On switching ON:
a. Lens froze in mid-position.
b. No display.
c. No power apparently, despite trying several batteries including the circular date battery.

Anybody experienced similar problems and knows how to solve. Have obtained advice about an E18 Error Message, but never saw this display, although symptoms are similar.

Thanks for the offer, but I have tried to dismantle the camera myself. I have found some indications of a faulty component and a corroded connector. I have now ordered a Canon A590 and hope we get a better life from it.

I have a a570 IS that the lense locked out on. fixing it was going to be the same price as buying new, so I took mine apart and after two tries, i fixed it. I would be willing to take a look at it for a heck of a lot cheaper than Canon can if your willing.

My lense cover is stuck in a half-way position (Canon Power Shot A530).

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Error on lens restart camera

try these:-
  • connect it to pc and on it
  • vaccum the barrel of lens
  • changing mem. card and batt. for 2min.
  • shake it.
  • on and off in different positions
  • hit the part near lens softly with palm (trust me this made mine work)

Camera won't turn on

I am assuming that the power does not go on or it immediately turns off as it is turned on.

Try the docking station or the 3.3 AC adapter to the camera. Plug that in to live power. If you hear the lens motor (by default the lens is retracted to closed position when plugged to AC power), then the camera is operational. If not, there is power failure with the camera.

If the lens motor work, then try to turn the camera while plugged to AC power. If it turns on, then there is something wrong with the battery or with the chamber. If the camera does not turn on, then check the button board for a bad power switch.

Check the LCD closely under a bright light when you do this test. You may see a faint a flash of display that disappears. I have not figured out what causes this. This would mean that camera power supply is working but nothing is telling for the camera to stay on.

A570is

When the lens will not retract and camera is not functional (no picture on display, and does not shoot) , and you already tried replacing batteries with a new fresh set (ensure please) , and then restarting camera with no memory card inside, then camera is faulty.

Try an easy fix by pushing gently the lens (do not force them, just help them) while you turn off camera at same time. Try also switching the mode selector.

If still no luck , then the camera must be disassembled to fix the problem.

Possible reasons are :

  • Faulty lens mechanism or jammed lens (camera usually turns off by itself in this case)
  • Main board faulty.
  • Ribbon cable to main board broken or connector defective.
  • If there is no power at all it is the connector from batteries to main board, this is also a ribbon cable.

If the camera is less than one year old will be replaced by manufacturer.

If your warranty is expired you can get an estimate for repair from manufacturer, or from a third party like Advance Camera here :Advance Camera Repair you can book the repair online.

Canon Powershot A570IS Problem

I have seen the same problem with my A570 IS. When pointing to a window or in an outdoor environment the iris within the lens closes completely within ~3 steps (look at the lens when pointing to the window). Therefor it is not a LCD issue at all. The fact that you can still take a photo with a closed lens rather suggests that the iris controlling software is corrupt. This will most likely just require a firmware update.I hope Canon will soon provide the software online.

E 18 problem

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

Lens stops functioning

Have you tried this same lens with other cameras? Do you have another camera body you can try? or perhaps a friend with a Canon EOS Camera? Also try the following please: Remove the lens. Look at the lens mount contacts, take a Cotton swap with some rubbing Alchol & clean the contacts very well, both on the lens and the camera body. Is your camera reading the lens aperture range correctly (at least most of the time)? Also since you replaced the PCB on the lens, isn't it under warranty? Let me know if this works. Thank you, AJ.
