Question about Jl Audio 500/1 Car Audio Amplifier

Bass freezes at a certain volumn and no longer gets higher

I have a 10W7 in a JL black enclosure being feed by a JL 500/1 V2 amp... when the volume is at 0 and raised to about 40 on my Pioneer 5000UB both the bass and the interior sound is even.... but as it goes past 40 the interiors take over and my sub doesn't kick out any more bass then it did at 40. Any ideas?

Thanks so much. I never even thought about clipping. I will test it out and repost. Oh I will add that when the bass starts to drop off I can use the bass boost on the head unit to increase the bass. I don't know if that helps clarify things.

The only solution for the loudness contour is to get a new receiver?

I will come back with some results of the tests you showed me and see how it goes.

    Thanks again a great response,
    Terrence

It sounds like you're driving the amp to clipping. When it reaches a certain level of clipping, the output will not increase any more. If you increase the gain on the amp and it does the same thing at a lower volume, clipping is likely the problem.

It could also be that the loudness contour for the head unit is tapering off the boost for the low frequencies at approximately 40 on the volume control. If you increase the gain on the amp and the amp produces the same or more output (than it did previously at 40) at a lower volume but the bass levels out again at 40, the loudness contour is likely the problem.

I cant get my jl audio w6 10s to give off much bass with the jl audio 500/1 amp

here is a manual for your subwoofers: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/8-12W6_BDS.pdf

use the wiring diagram for 1.5? (1.5ohm) with 2 speakers. the diagram for 3 speakers will not work, because it would bring the load down to 1 ohm, and the amp cannot go below 1.5 ohm.

to set up the amp:

under "preamp output section", on the "output mode" switch, select "amp filter"

to set up the levels: start with the amp gain pretty far down- with the input voltage on low for line level outputs from the deck, and on high for speaker outputs from the deck. now turn your cd deck as far up as it will go until it distorts, then turn the cd deck down to just where it stops distorting. now, you can start to turn up the gain on the amp.

on the filters, youll prolly want the cutoff filter around 100hz @ 24db slope. start with the infrasonic filters off, but, if you do get into them, try centering between 30 and 60hz on either, and, possibly dropping the cutoff filter to 80hz.

the manual is black and white and has 13 pages, but you say you have alot concern that the amp was used, if so you should give onlinestereo a call and let them know. just get the model and serial number from off of the box they came in.

JL 13w7 & 1000/1 Settings

There is no "perfect" setting that can be placed in a manual. It's all done by ear. Your settings will vary depending on the vehicle you are in, the type of enclosure you have, the type of music you listen too, how much voltage your deck put's out. There are many variables, but I can try to give you a basic guide.

First of all you need to know your enclosure. If you have a ported enclosure tuned in the mid to low 30's you may want to set the low pass to around 70-80 hz with your sub sonic set at 30 hz. this will give you the higher bass frequency you need for the loud bass you want, and protect the sub from going too far below the tuned frequency of the enclosure, and losing it's composure.

As far as the gain, and bass boost are concerned, you just have to adjust them by ear. First adjust the radio volume to normal listening levels, by that I mean as loud as it can go without the speakers in the car sounding like ****. Now you adjust the gain first. slow turn the gain control, carefuly watching and listening to the sub.. Adjust the gain to the point of the woofer getting a lil sloppy then back it down a bit until the sound is clean again. Now do the same with the bass boost. if there is a bass boost frequency adjustment, set that as close to the tuned frequency of the box as you can.

If you are in a sealed box the adjustments are a bit easier, and are all about taste. Adjust the radio as described before, and put on your favorite song. Next start udjust thing lowpass frequency to taste, not too high tho, try not us higher than 100 hz in your sub's for better sound. Sub sonic is not quite as important in a sealed box, as there is much less danger of the sub losing control.

Well good luck, and hope this helps!

What to do

well i don't know your budget, but if that's not really and issue, right now at best buy, alpine type E, 10" subs, peak is 750w and rms is 250w, each is 129.99. Alpine type R, 10" subs, peak is 1500w and rms is 500w, each is 199.99. These are the best subs i found at best buy. You could sell your current subwoofers and purchase those, and you'd save space and still get the lows you want. Goodluck

I have a 12W7 jl sub with no enclosure or amp.

Hello cdoran93,

Well, "best" and "loudest" are mutually exclusive. You can configure for one or the other, but not both at the same time.

The best (most accurate) bass is produced from a sealed enclosure, while the loudest (highest spl) is produced from a properly tuned ported enclosure. The recommended sealed box volume is 1.375 Cu.Ft. Ported is 1.75 Cu.Ft. For a ported enclosure, you need to decide what frequency to tune it for and then look at the JL specifications to the size of the port.

www.crutchfield.com has both types of enclosures at prices starting around $70.

Hope this helps.

It will work fine. This amp is stable to 1.5 Ohms, but is designed to put out about the same amount of power at 2 or 4 Ohms (unique).

Blowing fuses

You will need to have the amp bench tested at full load to see if there is a pending problem. It will need to see with speaker loading resistors, how much current the amp is drawing and at different frequencies. if the amp checks out with the proper current, at the rated output, have the speaker checked out. Good Luck
